George W. Bush, who declined to endorse Donald Trump (or anybody) in 2016, and made muttered elliptical criticisms of the 45th president, has thrown himself into the task of covering up Trumps many crimes. Bush, reports Politico, is raising money for candidates who are committed to maintaining the cover-ups.
To be sure, Bush doesnt put it that way, and almost certainly doesnt think of it that way. But it is syllogistically true. The Republican majorities in both chambers of Congress have followed a course of non-oversight, blocking disclosure of Trumps tax returns, allowing him to to be paid by figures at home and abroad known only to him, and preventing investigations of multiple cases of misconduct. Working to maintain Republican control of Congress is ipso facto working to maintain the cover-ups.
The most striking thing about this choice by Republicans is how little attention it has received. Kris Kolesnik, a former GOP staffer, wrote an op-ed in the Hill lamenting, There are no Republicans left in Congress, that I know of, who know what is or isnt credible oversight. A handful of conservative pundits have argued for voting Democratic as the only recourse for checking the administration. But, for the most part, the entire party has closed ranks around the no-oversight agenda. Republicans recently circulated a list of Trump scandals that would be investigated if Democrats win a chamber of Congress. The argument that such investigations must be prevented was not the conclusion but the premise.
This very much includes the parts of the party that see themselves as quietly resisting Trump. David Druckers reported story for Vanity Fair is quite typical. It notes sadly that the midterm elections are likely to cast out of Washington precisely those Republicans most resistant to Trump and his darkest impulses. Druckers Republican sources mourn that Paul Ryan and his colleagues forced Trump to govern as a conventional conservative. And they warn that Trump is not sufficiently worried about the prospect of Democratic control: He will not fully understand the incredible headache it will be, in terms of House oversight.
Nothing in the story explicitly acknowledges the decision Republicans made to quash oversight of the Executive branch. It is all treated as implied, which is why Drucker and his sources can blithely describe Ryans priorities as tax cuts and deregulation without listing the protection of Trump as a key arguably, the key priority of the Republican Congress.
Cover up what crimes? Name one, please. I’ll wait...
This family are scum to their very core.
I consider the Bush family to have caused more damage to the Republic than the Clintons. Evil is their very way of life
George W. Bush is raising money for Cheap Labor Express candidates.
The only goal of Bush League Republicans is turning the USA into North Mexico.
Does the author know that not only should one not drink the bong water, but they should not mix it with LSD.
All this analysis amounts to is “vote Democrat”. The media is just the Democrat party. If they were journalists the country would swing right based on the news reflecting reality.
The Trump cover-up of what?
“anonymous sources” has been worn out and not working any more? we need a new form of fake news ... hey, I know, let’s bamboozle the rubes with big fancy words! we’re not fake news anymore, we’re ersatz news, fugazi news, imitation news, phony news, oh, and what we publish is syllogistically true ...
The only crime the Bushes are trying to cover up, is their complicity in the attempt to undermine a sitting President.
Except there is no cover up. The election commission does not require tax returns from presidential candidates. Audited P&L only which Trump supplied.
Plenty more than that.
Their complicity in the violation of the Constitution that was the Kenyanesian Usurpation, the 30 year bipartisan policy of non-enforcement that resulted in 30 million fraudulently documented foreigners being here against the will of the citizens, the weaponizing of government agencies against the citizens.....
More poison mash for the civil war brew.
Every and ANYTHING bad about Trump - for the past few decades THAT’S NEGATIVE - has been prime time MSNBC, CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, New York Times, Washington Post, PBS, NPR, and every hollywood ‘actor’ who can shout the ‘F’ word - SINCE TRUMP’S BEEN ELECTED.
Not only have the above told us every bit of trash they can find on Trump they also made up stuff. Jonathan Chait is delusional.
