Thanks to cheap sex, marriage may be doomed.
The share of Americans ages 25-34 who are married dropped 13 percentage points from 2000 to 2014. A new book by sociologist Mark Regnerus blames this declining rate on how easy it is for men to get off.
Regnerus calls it cheap sex, an economic term meant to describe sex that has very little cost in terms of time or emotional investment, giving it little value.
Regnerus bases his ideas, in part, on the work of British social theorist Anthony Giddens, who argued that the pill isolated sex from marriage and children. Add online pornography and dating sites to the mix and you dont even need relationships.
The result is two overlapping (but distinctive) markets, one for sex and one for marriage, with a rather large territory in between comprised of significant relationships of varying commitment and duration, Regnerus writes in Cheap Sex: The Transformation of Men, Marriage, and Monogamy (Oxford University Press).
In generations past, women generally made men wait until marriage to have sex. To get a wife (and, therefore, sex), men had to be clean and presentable and have a good job. This, Regnerus reasons, gave men all the motivation they needed to become respectable members of society.
Now with porn on-demand and greater reproductive freedom, sex is a commodity available at any time. This has left men with little motivation for marriage, writes Regnerus, who cites demographer Steven Ruggles prediction that one of every three people in their 20s will never marry.

The man took the vow. The woman, most likely, is single and vowless.
HAHAHA! so true!
Yep. It happens. But the stats don’t lie. It is rare.
The husband isn’t always the loser, but he is usually the one who is the cheater.
Men will not usually leave their wife until they find a replacement. Women will do it without a replacement. In fact, they usually do. But not always.
Truer words were never spoken.
That's the spirit.
I'd wager her husband long ago learned how to say. "fine, dear", and an equivalent of "anything you say, dear" --without letting on he was faking it.

Come on now.
Ashley Madison? I’ve heard some of those married chicks are depraved. Rumor has it anyway.
Thank you-I just got in from work-we are building a gazebo outdoors-it is 91 and 60-65% humidity-since my compadre expects me to see to jobsite safety, I insist we leave off when it reaches 90 with sunshine and high humidity-as soon as the weather is cooler, we will be back to 8hr days...
I’m watching the interaction between the guys on this thread-today there are some more thoughtful guys offering honest observations-not just misogynists, or male superiority types who insist a man is lord and master-all females should bow to his “authority”, etc-more polite guys who can discuss without having the need to shout down those with a differing opinion-that is refreshing. Paul Ryan should bring his fellow RINOs here to observe a more rational way of discussion...
Polite discussion is good but at this point Paul Ryan needs a Blunt Instrument upside the back of his head to knock some sense into him.
Orrrrrr
He’s bought and paid for and just a pure traitor. I tend to think it’s latter rather than the former.
“Ashley Madison”-if you don’t want to get slimed or worse, please do not go there-one of the guys I work with got busted bigtime after taking up with a broad he met on the Ashley Madison site-when he didn’t cough up all the stuff she wanted, that bitch found a way to let his partner/woman know what a pig the guy was. She left for awhile, but they did get back together-she doesn’t trust him any more-can’t really blame her...
I do not like most women because they manipulate by being submissive on the surface while being calculating and angry underneath, but I have equal contempt for both male and female who frequent sites like Ashley Madison...
Either way, his automatic pilot is stuck on stupid for sure-my cowboy said he’d like to interrogate Ryan alone for about an hour-I think he needs electroshock therapy-upside the head with a 12 volt battery...
I get the impression that AM has a lot of “Sugar Babies” in addition to the married women. What a dangerous game for men. Real Honeypot stuff except for ordinary joe.
Well, I just wanted to wish you a very happy birthday. It looks like you had a good day despite such heat. It’s been cool here in the northeast for days and today it went up to only 83 but seems hotter because of the former cool weather.
Smart guys do.
Dumb ones like me get tired of it, and just let it rip.
Joke ‘em if they can’t take a you-know-what.
I have a very high IQ (or at least used to, before I took to chugging bottles of Ultra-Dim Fast) but “emotional IQ” in low/challenged/rides a short bus range, with my own personal social IQ not all that much better. Or so I’ve been told, and evidence seems to suggest...
I don’t blame you for being upset. Of course I don’t know the circumstances (none of my business), but I am sorry for your son’s situation. Not everyone who claims to be a Christian truly is a Christian, and even Christians do some really awful things at times.
I was ASTOUNDED not OFFENDED.
I have four grown daughters. They are a blessing.
Cheap sex? With the significant rise in STD’s I think not!
And I wasn’t giving you advice. I was making a comment on a public forum where you posted about your daughter.
I’ve raised four daughters, one just married this past Saturday, and I couldn’t be more proud of them. Two college graduates working in their fields and two currently in college doing well. Lots of sleepless nights with the youngest, who is my clone, during her high school years but she matured finally. None are perfect. Parents usually do their best and are fortunate if that’s enough.
Well, I raised four kids and stayed home for the first 14 years and started at the bottom again. I worked for it. But I happen to think SAHMs work a whole lot harder than those who put their kids in daycare.
