Thanks to cheap sex, marriage may be doomed.
The share of Americans ages 25-34 who are married dropped 13 percentage points from 2000 to 2014. A new book by sociologist Mark Regnerus blames this declining rate on how easy it is for men to get off.
Regnerus calls it cheap sex, an economic term meant to describe sex that has very little cost in terms of time or emotional investment, giving it little value.
Regnerus bases his ideas, in part, on the work of British social theorist Anthony Giddens, who argued that the pill isolated sex from marriage and children. Add online pornography and dating sites to the mix and you dont even need relationships.
The result is two overlapping (but distinctive) markets, one for sex and one for marriage, with a rather large territory in between comprised of significant relationships of varying commitment and duration, Regnerus writes in Cheap Sex: The Transformation of Men, Marriage, and Monogamy (Oxford University Press).
In generations past, women generally made men wait until marriage to have sex. To get a wife (and, therefore, sex), men had to be clean and presentable and have a good job. This, Regnerus reasons, gave men all the motivation they needed to become respectable members of society.
Now with porn on-demand and greater reproductive freedom, sex is a commodity available at any time. This has left men with little motivation for marriage, writes Regnerus, who cites demographer Steven Ruggles prediction that one of every three people in their 20s will never marry.

LOL! All women disgust you.
You know, Papa, I’ve always thought you were a real jerk. Now you’ve proved it.
I hope it works out for you!
He’s a new boy! I see that two of the worst women haters here joined this year. Interesting development!
>LOL! All women disgust you.
Only Rosie O’Donnell.
Thank God I don’t usually encounter men of their calibre in everyday life.
Go away, new boy. I don’t talk to newbies once I’m made aware.
Phew! Some of them have finished their beers and hot dogs and have come back after a snooze. Luckily, I’m about to start dinner.
Happy Labor Day, Trish. Hope it’s been a good one. Beautiful evening here.
Thank you, miss marmelstein! A very happy Labor Day to you too! It’s been a beautiful day and promises to be a lovely evening.
You have a way of getting that kind of response out of a guy -- then whine about it once you get it.
Stay in NYC, woman.
Its a step by step process. First people decide theyre more holy than Paul by ignoring:
1 Timothy 2:1213, But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet. 13 For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve.
And they place women in positions above men. Once done the next step is think theyre more holy than God and ignore his commandments entirely and celebrate sodomy and abortion. And then all you have left is Satans church filled with leftist evils.
Agree with you on this. It's sad but very predictable.
I was amazed and embarrassed to see women in my neighborhood wearing these hats on January 21. They looked incredibly ridiculous. One told me she took part in the "Women's March" and her boyfriend was wearing one too. Pathetic!
Buzz off and get back to The Little Rascal’s He-Man Woman-Haters Club, creep! Spanky and Alfalfa miss you.
My mom talked to me about birth control (back in the 70s and 80s) and abortion, so I knew about it. My best friend got pregnant in high school and had an abortion and it floored me since I considered it murdering a baby and still do. My Mom said that with all the availability of birth control that abortion wasnt necessary and birth control pills and other forms were the lesser evil.
Then when I had my own kids, I talked about it to them. Abortion is murder and wrong. A baby is always a blessing. If you find yourself in that situation, tell us and it will all work out. Birth Control isnt a good thing but be practical and use it if youre having sex. Dont have unprotected sex ever (pill, condoms, etc.). But if you do, and youre pregnant, then come to us and it will all work out.
My Mom and my Catholic schools talked about birth control and abortion. Numerous nuns telling us that this was a societal change of epic proportions. They were right. We just didnt understand it at the time as kids and teenagers.
Lucky you. At least people talked to you about it. By the time I was confirmed, the nuns were no longer wearing habits and old traditions and beliefs were falling (subtly) by the wayside. I wish the priests and nuns had spent a little more time on topics of Christian dating and marriage and less on the "Why Man Creates" gobbledygook film that had nothing to do with Christianity at all.
A friend of mine in high school got pregnant and married her boyfriend. I didn't know (personally) of anyone who had an abortion. Some girls were on contraceptive pills: the "tough" girls who considered themselves the sexual avant garde, and the "respectable" girls who insisted they took it only to regulate their menstrual periods.
I’m surprised that you could recognize her sex. Good for you!
What did I just say? haha
You have a talent. It includes being blind to your own double-standards. You dish it out, right, left, and center -- but anyone say something you don't like, well then, they're a "creep" or whatever pops into your shallow, feminist mind.
I'm not a "woman hater" -- but-- I don't like you and a handful of other mouthy, cranky dames (that word "dame" --pretend I used some other word) around here, and elsewhere too.
You are not worthy of respect.
The same most assuredly cannot be said about other women, here on FR (of course) and elsewhere too -- naturally.
You've got to be kidding. You thought that was a cutting put-down, eh?
How can yourself being so dim be good for me?
Yeah, these guys can’t handle an American woman—lessee them take on Russian mafia. But not right away. Maybe a few weeks after the honeymoon. These dainty gals have lots of brothers.
I do hope that something will be good for you. Perhaps some time in the future.
Good luck.
