DEAR MEXICAN: I'm a Canadian woman who has been travelling to Mexico (Guanajuato y Oaxaca, the cute places) lately. I travel alone and want to understand the "social" rules a little better. I was told by an expat American living in Mexico that Mexican men think all American women are sluts. (I assume that generalization extends to canadienses.) His theory is that Mexicans see television shows like Sex and the City and think it's reality. I'm acutely aware of this when interacting with Mexican men, and as a result am somewhat guarded, which I really don't want to be. I'd like to be able to meet Mexican men on the same terms as Canadians—sure there's a possibility of a little steam, but maybe we're just platicando, amigo-like. What are your thoughts? Do mexicanos think we're all sluts? If so, why? Do Mexican women/girls save sex for marriage? Does this mean I can never have casual sex with a Mexican man again, for fear of perpetuating a stereotype?

Sadly, I live in America and I think American women are sluts. This woman seems like she is one of them.
Probably because they are. A lot of women go to places like Mexico, alone, so they can behave in ways that they would not at home.
The unvarnished truth is that Mexico was colonized by a european people (both Spain and Portugal) who had been subjugated themselves by muslims for the previous eight centuries give or take. During that time, they picked up a few distictive cultural holdovers, like a low opinion of women. So in a nutshell, if you want to know where it comes from, look at present day middle-eastern societies.
The entire country is corrupt and a hellhole.
When I worked in hotel kitchens, I had a lot of friends of Mexican heritage. All were married or had a girlfriend but all were willing to fool around with any woman at the drop of a hat. And that was ok in their world. One time I did something no one should do - ask jokingly to a Mexican guy with a sharp knife in his hand if his wife could fool around too. Nearly got my Carotid aerated. Kind of a man’s world.

Latin America was colonized by both. I put Portugal in there because it was part of Al-Andalus. But you already knew that.

Watch the women on Mexican TV and they act and dress like sluts. Mexican men have a low opinion of most women because of it.
