What is wrong with this picture?
It's one of those things that you don't get, until you get it. Unless you are eternally empathetic, you look at this photo and don't see much wrong at all.
To Anne Belanger, mother of Miles, the photo is unbearable to look at.
When the class portrait for her son's Grade 2 class came home, she opened it excitedly, and immediately shoved it back in the envelope. She couldn't look at it. It broke her heart.
Anne's son, Miles, has Spinal Muscular Atrophy. At the age of 13 months, his parents were told that Miles would never walk, he has spent his life in a wheelchair.
Miles knows he's different than the rest of the kids, but he still tries to fit in. So there he is, on the far side of the image, neck craning as far as he can to stretch into the frame with the rest of his friends. He's beaming. It's school picture day and he's thrilled.
But the photo still broke Anne's heart. The photo was a clear example of how set apart her son is from society. Instead of a big group hug photo with Miles at the center, and classmates and teachers all around, a fully inclusive image, he was stuffed off to the side, some 3 feet away. An after thought, it seems.

And you took this thread and topic to attack another poster. How typical of you. Can’t debate the topic so you attack posters you disagree with...or posters who aren’t afraid of you, lol. You are so transparent.LMAO
Now I’m done with you, lol
So that’s your issue? That’s why you’re losing your temper? It has nothing to do with this thread, but some obsession you have? You verbally attack unsuspecting FReepers out of some perverse need to get on the good side of someone they’ve had a disagreement with? What kind of sick bitch does that?
There you go projecting again, lol. You’re an old biddy whose kids don’t talk to you and husband left years ago. We get it. Keep projecting, maybe someone outside of your online circle of friends will believe it eventaully.
How did that mission against humblegunner work out for you? If I recall, you accused him of being a wife beater, child abuser, etc. You tried desperately to get him banned from this site.
If you’re trying the same with me, know I don’t care. I saw you for what you are over 6 years ago. You really should get a hobby.
Much better.
Somewhere around the middle of this thread. As I recall, they weren’t referring directly to this kid, but to a different child. It wasn’t the only insulting post directed at disabled people in general.
I don’t remember logging into your account and telling people “Bullshit” and “KMA.” That was all you. Own it.
Why are you pinging others to the flame war you’re trying to start? You should know that’s bad form. You brought them up, not me. And now you’re trying to recruit them to your sick game. Why don’t you just apologize and crawl back in your hole?
LOL there you go again projecting. It’s rather interesting. Losing my temper? You crack me up. You’re entertaining, I’ll give you that.
I’ll admit, I’ve wondered sometimes what makes people like you tick then realized it’s the delusional world you live in, wanting what othet people have, and I’ll never understand it.
It’s funny. I haven’t lost my “temper” or had an “issue” or ‘obssession” like you and I haven’t verbally attacked you or anyone else. Yet, you call me a sick bitch. It’s interesting. Vulgar namecalling is always interesting, lol.
You kiss your kids with that mouth?
I thought it was good form to ping those mentioned in a post? Is that wrong? Geez, all these rules confuse me.
I’m so sorry. I apologize for talking to you, responding to your post and calling you on your bullshit. I guess it’s the way of public internet forums. I’m sorry I didn’t fall into line like you’re used to. LOL.
I don’t try to recruit anyone sweetie. I guess the nettiquette changed.
I’m sorry. Crawling into a hole now, lol You really do need to get a life and stop projecting. Night ;)
It looks like it's at the end of the bleachers.

*big group hug with him in the middle*?
What about the whole rest of the class? Don't any of THEM deserve to be in the center as well?
Careful... There are apparently two sides posting here, the ladies who side with the hand-wringing, over-sensitive mother who saw a stinking class photo and took an imagined slight to the press, and those who find the whole thing an embarrassing and ludicrous curtsy to political correctness. You probably also didn't like it when the ladies on 'The View' sympathized with that poor, harried mother who drowned her own five kids in the bathtub, am I right?
That would have been the best solution.
I would expect a real professional photographer would have figured that out.
That is not what I said or implied. As someone that has some experience with photography I think that there were half a dozen better way to take the picture, many of which have already been listed in previous posts by others.
The one thing I sure as hell wouldn't have done is to set him off to the side to feel ostracized.
Excellent job photoshopping.
Please quote from the article where she demanded that he be "the center of attention."
There are half a dozen better way this picture could have been done.
Did you see the footnotes at the link? The parents understand that most people have no malicious intent. They just want people to understand how their actions affect others. With most people, that’s all that’s necessary. It is the rare individual who has true malice toward disabled children. Most people just don’t realize how isolating disabilities can be, and how hurtful it can be to exclude them from regular activities most of us take for granted.
I didn’t see bb name any names.
I think your over reaction and dragging other FReepers names into it speaks more volumes.
Something about projecting.
You have a guilty conscience or what?
Well, there's a third side. Those who think too many people are too easily offended. It was a class photo that was poorly done. I wasn't in the center of any of my class photos. Should I have been offended because I wasn't in the middle of a big group hug?
You probably also didn't like it when the ladies on 'The View' sympathized with that poor, harried mother who drowned her own five kids in the bathtub, am I right?
*The View*? Never heard of it, but no, would not have sympathized with any harried mother who drowns her own children. I'm kind of callous that way.
Not all disabilities are so visible. I have my own issues to deal with that keep me from living life *normally* and keeps me from participating in regular activities that most people take for granted. It ain't easy but that's life. I just avoid those situations and move on.
