If you think comparing Mitt Romneys supporters in the American South to the Civil Wars Confederacy would be irresponsible and racially suggestive, Daily Beast Daily Dish blogger Andrew Sullivan apparently disagrees with you.
If Virginia and Florida go back to the Republicans, its the Confederacy, entirely, Sullivan declared on this weekends This Week with George Stephanopoulos.
You put a map of the Civil War over this electoral map, youve got the Civil War, he added.
That comment drew the ire of Washington Post columnist George Will, who said the presidents policies not racism are influencing voters in states like Virginia and Florida.
Democrats have been losing the white vote constantly since 1964, so thats not new, Will said. Heres what were trying to talk about 2008, Obama gets that many white votes. This time the polls indicate he may get this many. Were trying to explain this difference. Now, two possible explanations a lot of white people that voted for Obama in 2008 watched him govern for four years and said, Not so good, lets try someone else. The alternative the Confederacy hypothesis is those people for some reason somehow the last four years became racists.
Sullivan countered that he wasnt necessarily alleging racism.
Im just pointing out the fact that the white people that have changed their minds happened to be in Virginia and Florida, Sullivan responded. And if you actually look at the map, they were the only two the Southernization of Republican Party, they were the only two states in 2008 that violated the Confederacy rule.
You made an empirical statement that is checkable and false, which is the white people moving, moving away are in those two states, Will countered.
Isn’t dementia a sympton of HIV/AIDS?
Obama is losing more than whites in Florida; he has a Hispanic problem there as well.
Let’s assume that everything is racist. Can we move along now?
Remind me again Mr. Trig Truther as to what party the old Confederate planters and secessionists belonged to?
While flipping through the channels this morning, I actually caught this ridiculous tv moment. I used to watch “This Week” quite regularly back in the Brinkley days, but stopped entirely after he died.
Anyway, the show looked like some kind of SNL parody, with that pervert Sullivan sitting there talking about a new “Confederacy,” and that loathesome skank Nicole Wallace grinning aside him, and Stephanopolous intently staring. Beltway punditry never looked so embarrassingly pathetic. It just jars me to think this is what has become of the show I used to watch so much those many years ago.
This much is true, however the racism accusation is a red herring. It is true now as was then, this "Cold" Civil War is about the relation ship between the Federal and the State(s). The first Civil War was about states rights, and here we are again.
This is like deja vu all over again. -- Yogi Berra
Indeed. That’s the first clue their thought process is twisted.
I suppose it is amusing in a way that a southern Republican Confederacy today, while retaining the spirit of the American Revolution, would also retain the spirit of Lincoln’s Union, freedom and liberty.
And once again, the Democrats would be on the wrong side of history, supporting oppression, hate and the seven deadly sins as is their want.
As an interesting aside, I think it helps considerably to understand the Democrat point of view by reading the book, Cannibals All!, or Slaves Without Masters (1857), by George Fitzhugh.
It is not just a passionate defense of slavery, but a view of slavery as “proto-socialism”, a system so good that 9 out of every 10 people should be slaves, working for the remaining 1 out of 10 who would be the masters.

I guess Andrew's on television, so that counts for something in terms of significance. Call that a 5 to begin with. But in comparison to other television pundits, he's a small fish, so that puts him down to a 2 or a 3 for significance.
Then decide whether it's worthwhile posting what he has to say. Is his outburst really important enough to post here? I don't think there's much validity in what he has to say. You might think it reveals something about what the "media elite" is thinking, but I suspect it just gives people something to get riled up about.
As if the storm wasn't bad enough. If you see his massive jaws moving in your direction, flee!
“Did all of those voters become racists over the past four years or did it just take them four years to notice that Obama is black?”

Well, you know how they think, aside from being racists we are all supposed to be very slow.
Isn’t Andy a bitch?
Aw, shucks, Andrew; we knew what you meant.
>>You put a map of the Civil War over this electoral map, youve got the Civil War, he added.
As a matter of fact, if Leftist a-holes like you try to enslave the American people through your collectivist policies, you may just get the Civil War. You ideology is one of failure, poverty, enslavement, and death in every place that it has been tried for over a century. Get over it. The professors are WRONG!
These sorry, desperate piece of $hit would say and do anything to stay in power!
That’s how stupid the Dems are they are always talking about the Repubs when we all know that it was a Republican President that freed the slaves and that it was the Dems that were fighting integration. remember that Dem Sen. Byrd was a grand Wizard of the KKK.They always want to change history.
The poofter has run out of alarm bells to ring over the impending implosion of Obama and the Democrats, the Party of the Confederacy, and so now he is running wild with fantasies. He should lay off anonymous anal sex with thousands of men for a few days and maybe his cloudy thinking will clear up.
Looked at the video- and gotta say, George Will is not this slick, but it was hilarious. He is looking at Sullivan (a purported brit) as he said “this leaves two possibilities...
and he shows the back side of his right hand holding up two fingers in the classic British “V for Victory” sign (originally from the battle of Agincourt in 1415 , when the British archers, led by Henry V, showed their two fingers to the French— their arrow release fingers, that is. The French, when capturing Brit archers, would cut off those two fingers). The V sign, with back of hand facing away— is also the classic “UP YOURS” quite British sign— as distinguished from the Roman finger.
GREAT JOB, George, though I think it might not have been thought out.
I would think that the Confederacy would more likely make a comeback if Obama is re-elected.
