There are about 52 third parties, and a lot of them are conservative.
I think the electorate of today makes a huge difference compared with the electorate of 1856, when it comes to making sudden, bold, radical changes.
I also think that it makes a difference that there were only young parties, even the oldest party, the democrat party, was only about 30 years old at the time the republicans took the Presidency.
