Look, as everybody knows, I believe that Palin will either not run or mount a "non-serious" run (no staff, no funding) like Newt has done.
Although I do think she is toying with her supporters, I do believe she really cares about them and would not deliberately hurt them.
In my opinion, she probably knew nothing about this stunt. The Joe McGinnis book just came out and her cell phone was probably ringing off the hook for comments. I believe that she just turned off her cell phone, turned off her computer, turned off her TV, turned off her radio, went camping and shut out the world for the weekend.
In my opinion, she does not even know about this stunt yet.
Was Reagan "toying with his supporters" when he announced in November 1979?
Isn't it possible that Sarah has some strategic & tactical reasons for delaying?
Maybe McGinniss book may have a little something to do with her timing? How could she know in advance how the book would play out in the MSM, or with the public?
The defense you set out, while well intentioned, actually makes the point that an unconventional, go-it-alone, close-to-the-vest, outside-the-box management style is no way to run a successful enterprise, whether a presidential or PR campaign. An executive delegates authority.
The Sarah Palin enterprise, of whatever nature, needs a spokesperson who can speak authoritatively on her behalf to prevent exactly this type of hysteria. In the meanwhile, her failure to communicate her intentions has set up a horrible situation among camps of people whose ultimate goal is identical.
