The Glenn Beck Lincoln Memorial event brings to mind Brazilian Ze da Silva’s cartoon which on one side has Martin Luther King Jr. and on the other side President Barack Obama. On the left is the courageous, prophetic king who exalts, “I have a dream!” On the right is another courageous man, President Obama, bent low over his desk, muttering, “I have a nightmare.”
Both men represent a limitless, indescribable courage, filled with dreams for the American people. King has just appealed for social, economic and racial justice. Obama has dreamed of a country free of racial, religious and sexuality hatreds and of equal opportunity for health, wealth and education for all Americans. He has dreamed of financial security for the retired, the unemployed and the disabled, of resources redirected to energy-saving, scientific and technological research, yes, and of peace on our planet.
But he has inherited a financial disasters, a falsely justified war and military operations in Afghanistan. Moreover, he is besieged by undercover corporate ambitions financed by the wealthiest in our country, like the Koch brothers, to say nothing of the hailstorm of blatant lies fueled by the personal ambitions of persons like Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin. The corruptions of our history slopped on us by Beck during the run-up to Saturday’s event served simply to reflect the dishonesty of his served simply to reflect the dishonesty of his whole project. For example, the preaching mission in the colonies by George Whitfield, the famous Calvinist preacher, was strong but totally unrelated to the state’s rights or the individualism touted by Beck. Personal salvation is not the same thing as political freedom. And it had nothing to do with starting the War of Independence. Beck’s claim that his own movement started the civil rights movement is also patently false history.
However, Obama has not lost sight of his dream for us, the American people. Nor has he faltered in his efforts to build the great nation that we can be and of which our Founding Fathers also dreamed. But to build that nation will require that we all dream the dream with him and summon up the courage, the energy and the resolve to make that dream come true.
