A new 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair poll offers what is, I think, a somewhat misleading way to look at Sarah Palin.
The poll finds that 59% of Americans and 40% of Republicans don't think she'd make an "effective president" -- numbers that come very close to disqualifying her even in the primary, if she chooses to run.
This trouble imagining President Palin is constant across the polling since soon after she was chosen as John McCain's running mate, and it reflects both her own lack of experience and the higher bar set for a woman -- Hillary Clinton did years of carefully projecting the kind of strength Mark Penn thought she needed to show to be a plausible contender. (Holmes and Traister think there's now space for a Palin on the left, but the poll numbers suggest otherwise to me.)
In any case, however, it's possible to adore and follow a political leader without wanting him or her to be President of the United States, or even thinking he or she is qualified. The most frequently drawn parallel with Palin is Jesse Jackson -- popular and respected on much of the left for a time, at least, seen as presidential by smaller numbers.
But the Daily Show's Jon Stewart may be a better example.

Right, even just “once.”
Yes. Personally, and I am only speaking for myself, i adore Sarah and her family and really don’t want to see her have to endure the hate-fest that will come her way for 4 years if she runs and wins.
I believe she soars when she is free to do what she wants like she is doing now and will not have those liberties if she runs for POTUS. I want to see Sarah free, loud, everywhere, pushing, rallying the troops, and doing what she is doing.
TBH - I think she is too good to be constrained by the office of politicis to where is all nonsense like we see now.
I also believe after ZZZEERROOO, piss be upon him, is gone, we are facing such a disaster, I don’t want her being blamed for one ounce of it.
I like Thune for 2012.
So you drink the same thing, welcome aboard
ROFL. You think SQUID and/or pissant got to all of it nationwide?
Beau Rivage has it on hand but you need the Pit Boss to authorize it if you want it “free.” LOL.
Amazing. Just as I do when Palin nails one.
Honestly, I'd be thrilled if Sarah ran for president, but right now she's not even running, so why all the articles about her? Why all the hate against her? The tweaking of people who'd like to see her run. Why?
Of course I know the answer, and I'm glad to see Rush agrees with me too--the answer is FEAR. Abject fear. That's the only reason for level of hatred by those who hate her(including some on the right). They hate her because she is different, she doesn't follow their plans or their suggestions/predictions and still she keeps winning at almost everything she tries, and it drives them nuts. So they attack her again and again with the exact same results. Failure. They keep trying to pin her into a little box of positions, and she keeps breaking free, since they make up most of what they know about her and dismiss the rest.
Many the attacks I see on her policy positions are related to her time as Governor or as a Vice Presidential candidate. This is probably because she isn't currently running for anything. Comparing positions she took while running with McCain or while Governor of Alaska to positions she'd take while running for president is useful but not definitive, since doubtless her true positions on issues would be different trying to appeal to the entire US and running on her own instead of on someone else's ticket, so I'm still not sure why people don't argue some of her philosophy as stated in her book instead of something she said while running under McCain's rules against a hostile media looking for any excuse to bonk her on the head.
So basically, I guess I sort of understand why some people hate her, but I don't understand why they have to publicly state it every couple of minutes and attack anyone who doesn't hate her as some kind of brainwashed cult member. I further don't understand why people who are politically on the right are using left wing attack pieces to state their hatred for her, with the predictable result that since they are left wing arguments, they are based on flagrant emotion, lies, and phony polls instead of solid facts. We on the right should be better than that.
If you don't like Sarah Palin, fine. But at least argue policy positions she is promoting instead of arguing about her intellect, her looks, her family, her gender, or whatever other people say about any of the above. Let's stick to arguing her positions on issues and her accomplishments or failures on said issues.
Another reason she wears glasses. She looks SO YOUNG!
Whoa! “Radically religious foreign policy”? I hadn’t noticed any wild hair religious foreign policy from here. It’s pretty much the GOP platform in that arena, if I recall.
Beau Rivage is too hoity toity for this guy. Boomtown or The Palace usually. I actually tip, so I don’t usually have a problem getting whatever brand I ask for. Drink Myers Rum & Coke or a Bloody Mary, but have received Famous Grouse or better when I asked for it.
Nice try, pissy - I don't go looking to liberal Journolist sources for ammo to use against them. That's the key difference here - you'll roll on any ol' anti-Palin turd the media craps in your path.
As to her Presidential qualifications, I am frankly undecided. I love how she drives liberals (and a few of us) crazy and suspect that perhaps she might serve a more valuable role than President in that regard.
My sister is her age but looks 28, after 3 kids.
You could have saved us all some time if instead of playing “concern troll” you had been truthful and admitted that you just don’t want Governor Palin to be President.
LOL. We tip too, and the Beau is hoity-toity and we stayed there! Thankfully, we won pretty dar good too!
What’s a “concern troll”?
this kind of poll means nothing now.
Palin will prove herself in the primaries during the debates and her numbers will move with each victory she racks up. But no one is going to just hand Palin or anyone else the nomination they will have to earn it by beating all the other contenders.
The creme-brulee at the buffet is great, but then I’ve never had bad creme-brulee. Boomtown’s buffet is the best value for the money, IMO.
She’s beautiful inside and out. She’s perfectly qualifed, imo, and plenty smart enough to surround herself with the best minds of patriotic Americans in all positions of government.
