Redcoat refers to regular army, in which Washington never had a commission. You may rest assured that no British regular army officer ever considered Washington's commission in the Virginia militia to be the same as a British regular army commission.
If you were to say that Washington was a soldier of the King, you would be accurate.
As for wanting a regular army commission, I cannot fault Washington for being ambitious and desiring a reward for his service to the King.
If he had received the desired commission, it probably would have been in this regiment.

I was not finding fault with him. Merely pointing out he was very much a British subject.
