Abe Lincoln was a dictator??? (Need Help combating loony argument)

Posted on 04/19/2010 8:18:35 AM PDT by erod

Hi FRiends,

I have two brothers who I love very much, they’re young and libertarian Ron Paul supporters, sigh. We get along and I’m hoping that one day they’ll come back to conservatism, but they have bought into a theory that I don’t think makes much sense:

Abe Lincoln was a dictator.

There are many websites dedicated to this nonsense you can Google "Abe Lincoln dictator" and get some weird stuff, if you want to check it out.

I need your help in busting this myth are there any books I can read on this subject to dispel this stuff? Do you know any of the arguments to combat this nonsense? Ie. Lincoln did not want to free the slaves.

Thanks for taking time out of your day to help me out, -Erod

“A Constitutional View of the Late War between the States,” Alexander Stephens , 1870, Philadelphia: National Publishing Co.:

“When asked by Confederate Vice President Alexander Stepehens at the 1865 Hampton Roads ‘peace’ conference what would become of the freedmen without property or education, Lincoln sarcastically recited the words to a popular minstrel song, ‘root, hog or die.’”

Non - Sequiter, you would have made a perfect apparatchik for Stalin. I tire of your schooled bigotry. When you and yours are on the spit, don’t bother calling for help, you will find none. You are a man of no identifiable qualities, but are rather a study of typical academic deconstruction. You may have missed the part where academics theorize after the fact while real men act in the moment. Try meeting some real people for a change, it would do you some good.

I am looking forward to your defense of Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao, and Castro. I believe they too, didn’t mind breaking some eggs to make an omelette. It is quite obvious the number of deaths does not dissuade you from their defense.

Like most Lost Cause posts, this one takes a grain of truth, adds in a quote out of context, and presents it in a manner designed not to further the truth but solely to make Lincoln look bad.

Lincoln was not asked by Alexander Stephens what would become of the freed slaves. The question came from Robert M. T. Hunger of Virginia. And the question wasn't what would become of the freedmen, the question was what would happen to Southern society. His stated fear was that slaves, without their accustomed overseers and compulsion to work, would doom the Southern society to ruin. Hunter's fear was that no work would be done, nothing would be cultivated or harvested, and starvation for both blacks and whites would be the result.

Lincoln's response, "root hog, or die", was directed at the white part of that equation. Blacks already labored for their existence. But without their chattel it was the white population that would have to learn to work. The white population who would have to learn to grow their own food. The white population who would have to learn to root. Or die.

A complete description of the story and the context is here.

And I tire of the rabid imbecility of your posts. Keep your Lost Cause myths, cling to your imaginary Southern culture, and dream of the confederacy that never was and never will be. I honestly don't care.

No doubt you are. But you will be disappointed in that as well.

You are peddling that? 90% of farmers had no slaves.. You really need to stop the crack.

“You speak of the horror of slavery, the denial of another humans right to choose”

Equality,

I’m sure that by now you have seen there are those on this thread who cannot see their own hypocricy. Yes, they speak to the horror of the institution itself, of humans not having a right to choose. Yet, these very same individuals, would readily deny another the right to form a personal moral judgement regarding the origin of slavery.

I personally find no right to judge another’s opinions of the origins of bondage (compassion argument) vs death. One man would choose bondage, another would choose death. One man sees compassion, another sees no such thing. Who am I to sit in judgement another’s views on the origin of slavery vs death? Who is anybody to sit in judgement of another’s opinion on the issue?

Those of whom I speak are incapable of separating two completely different concepts, or perhaps they just choose not to.

Dear Non-Sequitur, it seems you care too much. This is the second day of your constant slurs against Southerners. It would seem anything of a southern perspective incites your attacks. As I said before, the South represents the American archetype. This archetype status attracts instinctually un-American critique. When your beloved (unknown) creates a culture that transcends the pedistrian please let me know. Until then, be happy in Lincolns’ and John Browns’ embrace.

Is it safe to visit Grant’s tomb? Do you venture outside of your gated community to visit this great Union of equals very often?

If you think anyone in my family owned a slave or benefited in any way from a slave you are badly mistaken. I now understand the depth of your hatred for the South. Idabilly and cowboyway were correct.. It is you, by that misrepresentation, show the true hatred here. Even the MSM isn’t as low as you.

“I have heard, in such a way as to believe it, of your recently saying that both the Army and the Government needed a Dictator. Of course it was not for this, but in spite of it, that I have given you the command. Only those generals who gain successes can set up dictators. What I now ask of you is military success, and I will risk the dictatorship.” -— Abraham Lincoln, upon his replacement of General Burnside with General Hooker for command of the Army of the Potomac

I can assure you that I have never spent a single moment wondering if anyone in your family ever owned or benefited from slavery. On the list of things I could not care less about you and your family rank pretty high.

I now understand the depth of your hatred for the South. Idabilly and cowboyway were correct..

I'm still pondering the reasons for the rabid hatred of the North and the U.S. that you and Idabilly and cowboyway demonstrate. Were you all bitten by a Yankee as a child.

I wouldn't know, but you obviously spend enough time there to get to know the inmates. Sounds like you're more comfortable around them than I.

In context:

Executive Mansion,
Washington, January 26, 1863.

Major General Hooker:

I have placed you at the head of the Army of the Potomac. Of course I have done this upon what appear to me to be sufficient reasons. And yet I think it best for you to know that there are some things in regard to which, I am not quite satisfied with you. I believe you to be a brave and a skilful soldier, which, of course, I like. I also believe you do not mix politics with your profession, in which you are right. You have confidence in yourself, which is a valuable, if not an indispensable quality. You are ambitious, which, within reasonable bounds, does good rather than harm. But I think that during Gen. Burnside's command of the Army, you have taken counsel of your ambition, and thwarted him as much as you could, in which you did a great wrong to the country, and to a most meritorious and honorable brother officer. I have heard, in such way as to believe it, of your recently saying that both the Army and the Government needed a Dictator. Of course it was not for this, but in spite of it, that I have given you the command. Only those generals who gain successes, can set up dictators. What I now ask of you is military success, and I will risk the dictatorship. The government will support you to the utmost of it's ability, which is neither more nor less than it has done and will do for all commanders. I much fear that the spirit which you have aided to infuse into the Army, of criticising their Commander, and withholding confidence from him, will now turn upon you. I shall assist you as far as I can, to put it down. Neither you, nor Napoleon, if he were alive again, could get any good out of an army, while such a spirit prevails in it.

And now, beware of rashness. Beware of rashness, but with energy, and sleepless vigilance, go forward, and give us victories.

Yours very truly
A. LINCOLN

So what exactly is wrong with it?

cling to your imaginary Southern culture
____________
Imaginary? I pity you, I really do. Something must have happened to you in the South to cause your intense hatred of it. Maybe it’s jealousy, coming from Chicago and now stuck in Toto land, but whatever the reason, you are a nutcase.

______________
Well, they learned. However, the government made sure they kept the black man down and taught them well how to suck on the tit of the Federal government for their survival.

This is the second day of your constant slurs against Southerners.

2nd day? If you really want to see obsession and hatred take a stroll though his past pasts. He has spent year, YEARS, doing it, day after day, all day long. He is OCD and I would really love to know what caused his intense hatred of the South. There has to be a reason and it isn’t slavery like he wants us to believe. Anyone that held slaves in the past is dead and buried, but his hatred is intense. However, if you read enough of his past posts, at times he seems jealous. Of course when he first came to FR he spent months telling everyone how great Islam was. Then he moved on to hatred of Southerners and love of gays.
