Abe Lincoln was a dictator??? (Need Help combating loony argument)

Posted on 04/19/2010 8:18:35 AM PDT by erod

Hi FRiends,

I have two brothers who I love very much, they’re young and libertarian Ron Paul supporters, sigh. We get along and I’m hoping that one day they’ll come back to conservatism, but they have bought into a theory that I don’t think makes much sense:

Abe Lincoln was a dictator.

There are many websites dedicated to this nonsense you can Google "Abe Lincoln dictator" and get some weird stuff, if you want to check it out.

I need your help in busting this myth are there any books I can read on this subject to dispel this stuff? Do you know any of the arguments to combat this nonsense? Ie. Lincoln did not want to free the slaves.

Thanks for taking time out of your day to help me out, -Erod

Abe the tyrant’s fagginess has been debated among scholars for years. They cite his troubled marriage to Mary Todd and his youthful friendship with Joshua Speed, who shared his bed for four years. David V. Derickson, who shared his bed whenever Mary Todd was away. So if the shoe fits.....

Wow, no fan of Abe, but I never really thought he smoked a pipe!

Forget your public school history classes and read real history for yourself. If you do that you will soon discover that Lincoln was anything but the saint he has been painted to be.

You can start here with the writings of St. George Tucker who's writings have been conveniently forgotten by those who adore the likes of Lincoln.

Your brothers are on the right track!

I knew about Speed, and didn’t think much of it given the availability of lodging on the frontier, but the other guy is news to me.

Hate to butt in, but how does military tribunals for captured alien un-uniformed terrorist equate to American citizens denied of their Constitutional rights?

If you have missed the news for the last several years, there are many American citizens working for Al Quida both overseas and right here in the good ol' US of A.

Say they start blowing up things, would you support suspending habeas corpus to be able to take the known suspects them off the streets before they kill more people? Or would you let them continue spreading death and chaos until they can be captured red handed?

You can laugh all you want but it’s true, or at least it was before the 60’s, where I grew up.

If American citizens, then they get a trial. If not, a military tribunal. I believe our AG wants them all to have trials. Seems, being a citizen of another country entitles you to the rights of American citizenship. This will go a long way to defining down the rights of American citizenship.

The sharing the bed thing is hardly evidence. It was common then.

John Adams and Ben Franklin famously shared a bed on their trip from Philadelphia to NY, where they argued about leaving the window open. (Adams was afraid that the draft coming thru the window would make him sick. Franklin explained to him that the germs perfer a closed, warm environment, and that ventilation provided by the opened window would, in fact, help him to not get sick).

Otherwise, Lincoln was probably a pipe-smoker.

The sad thing is, I think there is a LOT of similarity between Abraham Lincoln and Barack Obama.

Fortunately, it’s been 15 months, and we still haven’t had a violent Civil War . . at least yet

But by your reply, can we assume you support civilian trials for Al Quida terrorists as opposed to military tribunals?

You already have. I merely pointed out that the chief executive is a defacto dictator under martial law. It is a fact, not opinion.

We are not talking about trials. We are talking about habaus corpus. Two different things.

He was a tyrant. He valued the Union so much that he shat all over the Constitution. Obama has more respect for the Constitution than Lincoln did.

I disagree. Lincoln always wanted to find a way to reconcile his ends with the Constitution, and in 1855 he confessed to a correspondent that he could not.

Civil war allowed him to go around the Constitution using war powers, something that had been pointed out to people in the 1840's by John Quincy Adams.

Someone who wrote about just the issue you are concerned with, and who was not a committed votary of either side of the Lincoln debates, was the late Chief Justice Wm. Rehnquist, a top-drawer legal scholar and federalist who addressed the problems of war powers in a democracy (not just Lincoln, but Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt afterward, wielded war powers in abusive ways).

Rehnquist's book is entitled All the Laws but One (the title is a Lincoln quote), and I think it's still in print. Should be available everywhere, or try Brown Book Store or Amazon.com.

One group of people enslaving another may technically be one culture, but it’s nothing to brag about. Misty-eyed sentimental wishes for a return to the glory days of yesteryear are insulting.

Restoring the Confederate States of America to its rightful place among the nations of the world

CONFEDERATE PARTY PLATFORM

We, as common citizens of the United States, having come together with no major sponsors or controlling interests other than our common interest in liberty and equality have formed the Confederate National Party. We do now set forth in this document our common beliefs and agenda of what we wish to achieve as a national political party. We believe that the power of the government comes from the people governed and is granted by those people to the government for the protection of the people, not for the control of the people. The states which compose the country of the United States are sovereign entities superior to the Federal government of these United States and that the only true role for the federal government is to act as a unified voice for the several States in dealing with foreign nations and to serve as the central command of the armed forces in the event of war.

We believe in true equality and freedom for all people of all genders, races, beliefs, and religions. Our nation was founded on Christian ethics and principles and our forefathers acknowledged God and called on Him for His guidance in creating our country. We welcome persons of all religions or beliefs and encourage their free expression of those beliefs. We expect only the same courtesy in return for ours.

We believe in true and just laws which serve to further the safety and stability of our society; not laws which restrict our society and the daily lives of citizens.

With those principles in mind, we believe that the current federal government has become too large, too powerful, and too restrictive of the rights of the citizens of this country. We also believe that special interest groups have become too powerful in the governance of this nation and have established a reciprocating relationship with professional politicians in which the groups finance the political campaigns and are rewarded with monetary and legislative gifts from those politicians.

Having set forth those principles of our beliefs above, we have determined the following items to be key goals of our national agenda.

1. New Amendment to Constitution which repeals 14th, and 15th Amendments and abolishes slavery within these United States.

2. An Amendment to the Constitution which states that nullification and secession are inalienable and irrefutable rights of the States.

3. A law and eventual Constitutional Amendment declaring English as the official language of these United States.

4. Removal of all powers at the Federal level that are not explicitly given to the Federal government by the Constitution.

5. Immediate withdrawal from the United Nations and eviction of all United Nation agencies and organizations from United States soil.

6. Abolition of the Federal Reserve Bank.

7. Planned, gradual withdrawal of all U.S. military forces from all foreign nations and territories.

8. Federal income tax abolished and replaced by a system of funding through a direct levy on the states in proportion to the population of those states and established by convention of the states.

9. Reform of the federal judicial system removing many of the federal judiciary’s powers over the states.

10. A reaffirmation of the first 10 amendments to the Constitution. If necessary, a new amendment which restates the basic principles in such a way that cannot be mis-interpreted.

11. A limit on the salaries of elected officials. No elected official will ever receive a salary more than the median salary of the nation.

12. Legislation to insure that no elected official will ever serve more than two consecutive terms.

We believe that the common citizen of this country has become distrustful of professional politicians and feels disenfranchised. We will select our candidates from everyday working men and women from all facets of society and return the power to control the government and the nation to the average citizen. Our political organization is controlled and directed from the bottom up, in that the local party offices provide direction and platform items to the state organizations which then direct the national organization. With the support of the millions of Americans who have become disillusioned with the current system, we will push to return this great nation to the freedoms and greatness it once knew before the federal government began overstepping its Constitutional boundaries.

Jefferson Davis freed the slaves long before Lincoln.

No he didn't! Who's been saying that?

How do you tell the difference between Democrats, Republicans, and Southerners?

Answer: Pose the following question:

You’re walking down a deserted street with your wife and two small children. Suddenly, a dangerous looking man with a wild look in his eyes; and a huge knife in his hand comes around the corner, locks eyes with you, screams obscenities, raises the knife, and charges. You are carrying a Glock 40, and you are an expert shot. You have mere seconds before he reaches you and your family. What do you do?

Democrat Answer:

Well, that’s not enough information to answer the question! Does the man look poor or oppressed? Have I ever done anything to him that would inspire him to attack? Could we run away? What does my wife think? What about the kids? Could I possibly swing the gun like a club and knock the knife out of his hand? What does the law say about this situation?

What would the ACLU say? Does the Glock have appropriate safety built into it? Why am I carrying a loaded gun anyway, and what kind of message does this send to society and to my children? Is it possible he’d be happy with just killing me? Does he definitely want to kill me, or would he be content just to wound me? If I were to grab his knees and hold on, could my family get away while he was stabbing me? Should I call 9-1-1? Why is this street so deserted? We need to raise taxes, have a paint and weed day and make this a happier, healthier street that would discourage such behavior.

Republican Answer:

BANG!

Southerner’s Answer:

BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!

BANG! BANG! BANG! click....(sounds of reloading).

BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!

BANG! BANG! BANG! click.

Daughter: “Nice grouping, Daddy! Were those the Winchester Silver Tips or Black Talon Hollow Points??

A Southerner is having breakfast of coffee, grits, biscuits and jam, when a northerner, chewing obnoxiously on gum, sits down next to him. The Southerner ignores the Northerner who, nevertheless, starts a conversation.

Northerner..”When you Southern people eat bread, do you eat the whole slice?”

Southerner..”Yep.”

Northerner..(After blowing a huge bubble) “We don’t. Up North, we only eat what’s inside. The crust we collect in a container, recycle it, then transform them into biscuits and send them to the South.” The Northerner has a smirk on his face. The Southerner listens in silence. The Northerner persist..”Do you eat jam with biscuits?”

Southerner..”Yep.”

Northerner..(Cracking and smacking his gum between his teeth and chuckling) “We don’t. Up North, after we eat fruit for breakfast, we put all the peels, seeds, and leftovers in containers, recycle them, and transform them into jam, and then send it down South.”

Then the Southerner asks..”Y’all have sex up North?”

Northerner..”Why, of course, we do.” And he pops another big bubble. Southerner..”And what do y’all do with the condoms once ya use ‘em?”

Northerner..”We throw them away, of course.”

Southerner..”We don’t. Down South, we put them in a jar, melt them down into bubble gum, and sell them to Yankees.”
