Final chapter for 4 Boston libraries.

Officials are planning to shutter at least four Hub libraries and sack 100 workers to close a $3.6 million cash shortfall, infuriating residents who use the beloved branches now on the chopping block.

“A lot of kids around here live in the projects, and it’s going to be hard to get to a library far away. It’s a bad idea for these kids. They’re going to get in more trouble at home,” said Vera Mbah, 16, inside South Boston’s Washington Village Library, one of the four doomed branches.

“I don’t have a tutor,” added Mbah, who visits the library every day after school. “I come here.”

Final chapter for 4 Boston libraries - and so the full on communist agenda begins with this supression of free exchange of written communication. Once the communists get rid of all the library books, they regulate the internet and control all freedom of written expression. Pissah.

Library officials said they paid $530,000 in overtime pay in 2009 in addition to another $700,000-plus in bonuses to union workers misclassified as OT.

$.7 m of $3.6 m shortfall to union bonuses , while covering tracks as overtime. But why is this fact in last paragraph rather than headline?

Typical game plan.

City officials blow their tax revenues.

They demand as many increases as they can.

Which they get.

Then blow.

Then when they can’t get anymore, they announce that (in order to be fiscally responsible) they have to close some parks, close some libraries, and even cut back on ambulance and fire-department services.

Never mind the budget to buy hunks of ugly, twisted metal that they pay “artists” good money to create and then use to uglify public spaces.

Never mind the two dozen absurd studies they fund.

Never mind the excessive social services that they fund in order to maintain the voting class known as Dependents.

Nope.

It’s always parks, libraries, and ambulance and fire services.

Now that Obama’s President we’ll NEVER have to close another library, pay taxes, buy gasoline, pay our mortgage,..........oh wait, that didn’t happen! He’s actually bankrupted the country, raised inhuman taxes, and destroyed our economy. So I guess the fact that I’m black and expected him to set me up on easy street as he robbed the rich didn’t work out,..........oh, wait a minute, I guess he did rob those stupid white crackers after all......................

It’s called monument theory. If the Department of Interior budget gets cut by 1% they close the Washington Monument, Grand Canyon and Mount Rushmore.

Whenever your budget gets cut, an accomplished bureaucrat will always make cuts in the most painful and headline grabbing way.

Then it is time to fire these laggards and replace them with Corporate turn around experts that have to live by the accounting equation and are fiduciaries for the shareholders. I am so sick of DOI, DOE, EPA, etc etc, pulling these stunts to my knowledge, none of them have done Demming, Kaizen, Sig Sigma, events or processes to internally reinvent themselves>

Art Laffer is right, cut them all by 50% and that will force them to reinvent themselves. Adapt, Innovate, and Overcome.

I agree with you 100%. Just go in a library and fill out the form for a book you would like and watch their face.

The ALA is the most liberal organization out there. I spent half my childhood at the local library where the librarian probably made 20k a year and the budget was spent on books.

Today, librarians have Masters degrees or Doctorates and the requisite pay and benefits. It is not a coincidence that the great Dewey was instrumental in designing the “modern” library system:

“This common understanding of the means and ends of action is the essence of social control. It is indirect, or emotional and intellectual, not direct or personal. Moreover it is intrinsic to the disposition of the person, not external and coercive. To achieve this internal control through identity of interest and understanding is the business of education.”

Mbah visits the library every day after school.

Maybe. At least he/she says he/she does. But most of the big-town/city libraries I’ve visited are, sadly, little more than sanctuaries for an impoverished, filthy, stench-cloud of porn surfers.

the holders of all knowledge is the NEA.....only they can desiminate the proper information to the "children".....

govt....they tax you heavily and yearly to build libraries and zoos and public gardens and trails and bike paths and pools and parks....only to take them away whenever they choose....

THEY BELONG TO THE PEOPLE!

I have no beef with librarians...if nothing else, the books are there for you to read....if you want a specific book, they'll get it from another library or even buy it and send it to your house....

they don't make much money really...and they don't have the sweet package that teachers have...

the best students are found studying in the library IMO....

so cutting libraries is a horrible thing....

Under the disparate impact model so beloved of Communist plants, this is by definition racist.

Cheers!
