Slavery was an issue, noob, not the cause.

No, slavery was the cause of southern secession. The secession of the states and the war itself were two separate events. The cause of the southern secession was the fear that a Lincoln would somehow abolish slavery. The cause of the war was Lincoln's desire to keep the union together.
