I'm going to buy a gun before Obama makes it much harder to do so. I'm really leaning towards a .45 ACP so ammo is interchangeable with my family and for stopping power. There's a reason the big boys don't use 9mm. I want a short-barreled gun, suitable for concealing carrying. My price range is under $800, ideally under $600. I'm really, really leaning towards a double action with internal hammer, I don't want to have to cock it or worry about the hammer getting caught on clothing in an emergency situation. Two more things that is preferable, but not absolutely necessary, would be a 1911 frame, and high capacity clip.
SO basically I'm asking if anyone has a favorite make/model that they'd recommend with the above things in mind, (especially reliability!).

Just my most very humble opinion.......
Glock 30 in .45 ACP and Glock 27 in .40 S&W. Both of them can carry 10-11 rounds nicely, and are very compact.
Buy two.
357 snubbie revolver, then you can also shoot 38special(+p) etc.
Simplicity itself.
For a pistol, try the Springfield XD; about in that price range.

and....Now that I’ve actually read the rest of your post, I like the Springfield Armory 1911’s. They are carrying a compact 3” Gov’t model also.

I would recommend a .45ACP revolver... Smith and Wesson makes a nice one.
You get ammunition flexibility.... No difficulty in feeding hollowpoints, and even potential to shoot .45 GAP rounds if there is a shortage.
Moon clips, either half or full give you fast reloads.
You may want to consider the Taurus Judge. It is a .45 caliber that also shoots .410 shotgun shells. It is a very high quality revolver that you can get in various barrel lengths.
I just recently purchased a ParaOrdnance Warthawg. It’s a compact .45 with a 10 rnd magazine and a 3 1/2 inch barrel. After putting 500 rnds through the muzzle to loosen it up, I’m very happy with this weapon. I have 2 .357 revolvers and 2 Glock model 22s, and this for me is the ideal CCW.
Two suggestions:
The Springfield Armory XD Subcompact - .40 Cal. I use a Tucker IWB (tuckable) holster for it and it disappears under almost any shirt.
Very sweet shooting. Grip is actually thinner than a 1911.
Also, the Kel-Tec PAF 9mm. Very thin. Pocket carry pistol. You wouldn’t want to shoot this all day, but hey! That’s not what you want a carry gun for anyway, right?

I liked the Para except it seemed heavy for all day carry.
Chose the H&K P200SK. And have the 13 rnd P2000 mag with adapter. Solves the shorter SK handle issue and adds 3 rounds. 9MM for lower cost shooting.
Boom.
5 shot. 3" barrel. Chambers .45 Colt and .410 Magnum shotshells - simultaneously, if you choose. 36 oz. $608.00.

If you haven’t bought a gun yet for home defense or carrying in your car, you had better start with that before you think you’re going to carry a .45 Auto with you every day.
The big boys do carry 9MM in our military. The problem is they are restricted to fully jacketed bullets. You aren’t.
The barrel length isn’t be problem with concealment. It’s the grip frame.
If you’re new at this, you’re better off with a .38/.357 revolver with a shrouded hammer.
