At 1:30 a.m., Antonio da Costa heard a knock at the back entrance of the McDonald's restaurant where he worked as a janitor after-hours.
He opened the door, he recalled in an interview. There stood two men, each gripping a chain saw. One yanked the cord on his saw, stepped toward da Costa and shouted above the roaring machine: "We don't need Africans in our country. We're here to kill you!"
The two masked assailants cornered da Costa and began raking him with the whirring chain-saw blades. They slashed one arm to the bone, nearly sliced off his left thumb and hacked his face, neck and chest, the 37-year-old Angolan said, his voice quavering as he recounted the May 1 attack.
The gruesome assault in a suburb of Zurich -- consistently ranked in international surveys as one of the world's most livable cities -- dramatized the surge in racism and xenophobia as Switzerland confronts its most difficult social transformation in modern times. Today, more than one in five people living in Switzerland are foreign-born, the second-highest percentage among countries in Europe.
One of the world's oldest democracies is at the center of Western Europe's most divisive political debate: to embrace an increasingly globalized, multicultural society or to retreat into social isolation in an effort to preserve eroding traditional identities.
Across Switzerland, anti-foreigner and anti-Islamic attitudes have become so pervasive on the streets, in politics and within governmental institutions that the United Nations, European Union, Amnesty International and Switzerland's own Federal Commission Against Racism have expressed alarm in recent months.

Well, he didn’t do anything to deserve it. I got sidetracked.
I wonder how much illegal immigration they have - maybe everyone can get legal easily.
It’s a nifty idea. Don’t know how it would work here, though, since we’ve got so many different communities, plenty of which are ideologically inclined to welcome any and all immigrants with open arms.
Every day, in a different paper, the MSM continues its jihad against the good Swiss people, portraying them as racist maniacs trying to put Nazi laws into effect. Saturday it was the TimesUK, Sunday it was the NYT, today the WP. Who will it be tomorrow?
i think they have VERY strict controls on who can stay and for how long and for what purpose. these people run their country like they make watches: by the book. you don’t get into switzerland without them knowing about it.
Ever hear of James Byrd Jr.?
If you are expecting the Washington Post to answer that question honestly, I think you will be disappointed.
If there were papers being published among the Indian Nations when (my) ancestors were colonizing the US, they’d be the liberal elite papers today, basically saying, don’t be a xenophobe, there’s nothing to see here, just sit back etc.
“But the pale faces are taking over the joint...?” an Indian might have written.
“Don’t be a xenophobe, Red man.”
This cycle is basically repeating with us playing the role of the Red Man. It’s not an illusion. My ancestors were after the land, the new ones are after what we built with the land.
We elevated our culture to make it safe and passive, but that has in turn rendered us unable to defend ourselves.
I’m afraid to tell a Mexican waving a Mexican flag in my face to shove it up his @ss. If I did, and I was prosecuted (for doing it after he refused to), the other American pale faces would either be 1) those prosecuting me or 2) running in the other direction. I would have Bruce Springsteen and John Cougar writing songs about what an @sshole I am.
It’s un-effin-real.
...but any sense of nationality we have is being systematically eroded.
The US is in serious, serious need of an enema.
What is wrong with you people, is there a full moon out tonight?
Did you even bother to read TFA?
Also, I don’t think that word means what you think it means.
Seriously, whiskey tango foxtrot.
Whoa!! These Swiss don't mess around. I'm impressed. (I was gonna say something else, but I'd probalby be banned.)
1) Revolution over what? There’s plenty of things wrong with the country, but we were way worse off in the 60’s and 70’s. There’s nothing to shoot people over, yet.
2) As if the US military would just mindlessly shoot their neighbors because President Hillary said to. Give our men and women in uniform some credit. Geez.
Bill O’Reilly probably had a point. What a joke and what a bunch of xenophobes. I hate illegal immigration with a passion, but this guy from all accounts was a hard working legal immigrant. I wonder when the FR David Duke rally is?
That story smells. Unidentified hooded men, maybe they were immigrants too.
I don’t know if I’d say Bill ORLY was right about anything, but I agree the atmosphere’s getting thick with the stench of the fail in this thread
These tools (Stormfront, etc) have been trying to ride our coattails for years, but thankfully the mods keep them beaten down pretty well.
The nazis usually get a silent ZOT rather than the public humiliation treatment we reserve for DU-style moonbats, since they do make us look bad.
Well, at least we’ve gotten rid of the worst of the Ron Paul spammers, so there’s reason for hope. ;)
Lighten up, Francis.
I merely allude to the habit of certain US politicans to describe civilians on the border armed with nothing more lethal than binoculars as “vigilantes”.
*Rolls eyes* The 1st amendment protects even the dregsAs long as we can wave flags and make fun of em, there is no "crisis," just another set of kooks to make fun of alongside ANSWER, Code Pink, and the International Vegans for Fruit-flavored Communism.
As far as "doing nothing," how much does insinuating that Mexicans are intellectually inferior and threatening violence go toward that there revolution you're touting?
The border's borked, and folks like us are making lots of noise to have it fixed. Shooting your mouth off about shooting Pedro won't serve any purpose except to give fools like Bill ORLY and the Hildebeast more ammunition to use against us.
Frankly, that sort of nonsense doesn't belong here.
