It doesn't diminish him in any way, I don't give extra points for the military but I do take note of it. Leadership does not mean you have to be an expert in every field.

When you reached an executive position in one of the companies I worked at you were moved to departments and ran them even if it wasn't your main skill set. It in fact was a smart idea. And I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express Last night!

There is a certain warrior mentality that can only be obtained via military training as opposed to being a corporate leader. I served when Bill Clinton was the Commander in Chief, and the fact that he just couldn't relate to us was obvious.

Now, I'm not saying that someone who has not served is automatically disqualified. It's just that it's a huge disadvantage when trying to be an effective military leader.
