JOHN Bolton's resignation as the American ambassador to the United Nations makes it official: The Bush administration is now drifting idly toward a mixture of centrism and impotence.

In less than a month, two of President Bush's stronger and more independent aides - Donald Rumsfeld and Bolton - have been dispatched. Rumsfeld's designated successor, former CIA head Robert Gates, is a leading member of the Beltway's permanent bureaucracy.

The administration seems to be waiting for the Baker-Hamilton commission of old Washington hands to dictate U.S. policy on Iraq. Leaks from the commission suggest it will recommend a gradual U.S. withdrawal camouflaged by negotiations with Iran and Syria over a new Mideast grand bargain.

All of this feeds an exaggerated defeatism in the United States over Iraq.

Rumsfeld's abrupt firing was an act of flagrant disloyalty to a loyal subordinate. The defense secretary had made his share of mistakes - notably, his failure to crush looting immediately after the fall of Baghdad - but he had followed the president's policy faithfully.

We don't know for certain the reasons for Bolton's departure: Either the White House wasn't prepared to fight for him, or he was no longer prepared to lend his voice to the diplomatic charade over Iran and North Korea. Either way, his departure demonstrates timidity on the administration's part. The net result will be that Bush has one less loyal subordinate in the shrinking ranks of his own administration.

I just got out of boot camp; it was when Reagan ordered the strike against Khadafi (sp?).....went out on liberty, ran into some bikers at a club near Great Lakes; thought I was going to have a rough time.

They paid for all of our drinks (I was much younger then).......I heard from them first how we smacked that (fill in your noun) down.

I am more and more convinced this is a silent coup........that they are trying to take down this president.

It's been that way since the President first took the oath of office, unfortunately in my opinion the President doesn't see it that way and instead of playing hardball with these people he's decided to turn the other check and play nice.

It's getting hard to maintain with the nonsense that is pervading at the moment; I'll do my best to keep it civil.

Bush will go down in history just like his father did - a failure. His father did everything possible to undue Ronald Reagan's legacy abroad and at home. He served one pathetic term in which he broke his promise not to raise taxes and caved into the Democrats. He lost an election after running one of the most pathetic campaigns in history to a liar, a sexual predator and a traitor.

His son started out sounding pretty good - a lot tougher than his father. But then he made similar mistakes. He threw away his victory in Afghanistan and Iraq by not finishing the job and taking out the ayatollahs and the Syrian Baathists - just like his father failed to take out Saddam when he had him by the short hairs.
He committed our military forces - the best the world has ever seen, to fighting a defensive war in Iraq while the Iranians and Syrians funded, encouraged and supported "insurgents" and infiltrators with impunity. His failed scheme to bring democracy to a population which couldn't possibly understand the meaning of the term and really could only appreciate a benevolent dictator resulted in a catastrophic defeat in the mid-term elections, wiping out the gains a real political genius - Newt Gingrich had made during the Clinton years. He appointed a few good conservative judges - in a at least one case under duress, and tried to defend an indefensible policy regarding the Dubai Port Deal.

He has washed away the southern U.S. border, opening us to invasion by millions of foreigners of unknown origin and purpose and has perhaps forever altered the multi-ethnic composition of America.

Running as a "compassionate conservative" he replaced his conservative AG with a man who supports illegal aliens, affirmative action, gun control and abortion.

THAT is Bush II's legacy.

Unlike yourself, I am wedded to a political philosophy, not to a personality cult.
