W'S DRIFT TO IMPOTENCE
N Y Post ^ | December 6, 2006 | JOHN O'SULLIVAN

Posted on 12/06/2006 2:06:31 PM PST by Sabramerican

JOHN Bolton's resignation as the American ambassador to the United Nations makes it official: The Bush administration is now drifting idly toward a mixture of centrism and impotence.

In less than a month, two of President Bush's stronger and more independent aides - Donald Rumsfeld and Bolton - have been dispatched. Rumsfeld's designated successor, former CIA head Robert Gates, is a leading member of the Beltway's permanent bureaucracy.

The administration seems to be waiting for the Baker-Hamilton commission of old Washington hands to dictate U.S. policy on Iraq. Leaks from the commission suggest it will recommend a gradual U.S. withdrawal camouflaged by negotiations with Iran and Syria over a new Mideast grand bargain.

All of this feeds an exaggerated defeatism in the United States over Iraq.

.....

Rumsfeld's abrupt firing was an act of flagrant disloyalty to a loyal subordinate. The defense secretary had made his share of mistakes - notably, his failure to crush looting immediately after the fall of Baghdad - but he had followed the president's policy faithfully.

.......

We don't know for certain the reasons for Bolton's departure: Either the White House wasn't prepared to fight for him, or he was no longer prepared to lend his voice to the diplomatic charade over Iran and North Korea. Either way, his departure demonstrates timidity on the administration's part. The net result will be that Bush has one less loyal subordinate in the shrinking ranks of his own administration.

If the best choice for President is Obama, we are practically finished as a nation. He doesn't have enough experience to run city hall in a medium size city. Why does anyone think he is qualified to be President of this Nation?

If you think Bush would fire Rummy then it is you that is naive. Rummy is 78 yeas old and he is dead tired. GW knows that and he also knows that given the traitors in both parties, Iraq is probably lost and he did not want that to happen on Rummy's watch.

That right there is going to leave a mark. No equivocating whatsoever. Lost. As in defeat. But the upside is that somebody might spin it to political advantage. Abhorrently disingenuous.

Neither do I.

Iraq isn't a failure.......it's a failure in the sense if the mass media (again) dictates what is success or not.

World War II would be a failure according to those types.

Gee ya think it might have something too do with the fact that my mother had a better chance of getting confirmed? And she's been dead for ten years.

Yes LOST. Bush cannot fight the war alone. You and those like you made this mess and now you are wallowing in it like pigs in slop. There is NO president that can fight a war when his own party is worried about appeasing a base that is never there and a base that whine like little girls that are starving for attention and then sulk and stay at home when the stakes are as high as they are right now. You got the election results you wanted so just STFU and enjoy the results.

To: Scott from the Left Coast

I was just reading over at NRO and this IS funny:

Vote of Thanks [John Derbyshire]

On behalf of all low-WQ (that's Wonk Quotient) sluggards, I'd like to extend heartfelt thanks to Rich and the others who went through the trouble of reading through that ISG report, so the rest of us don't have to.

It seems the only thing I would have learned from reading it is that what G.B. Shaw called "the great and the good"—the likes of Sandra Day O'Connor, James Baker, etc.—are not actually very smart, and rarely have anything interesting or useful to say.

Which I already knew.

I'll stay away from harsh words tonight; I think it will be counterproductive.

I'm familiar with your posts over the years; I would suggest that the ghouls about to take over our government would be a more appropriate target for your vitriol.

Which is telling; perhaps I'm wrong, but I think Bolton was doing a fine job.

.....of course, talent never matters much to liberals; if it's 'johnny commie', he's all right with them.

Can't we all just get along?"

Howling isn't this overused statement where you just want to say "Yes, we could all get along if it wasn't for some blank..blank that doesn't have anything better to do but stir up blank.. all the time"?

Oh, how I hate it when someone is loosing the argument and tries to end it with that statement.

Resources and winning strategies would follow.

Sure thing. $300 Billion, another 400,000 active duty troops, and more Pentagon spending will fix everything now.

The next two years are going to be more important than people realize; we cut and run, or fight the good fight.
