W'S DRIFT TO IMPOTENCE
N Y Post ^ | December 6, 2006 | JOHN O'SULLIVAN

Posted on 12/06/2006 2:06:31 PM PST by Sabramerican

JOHN Bolton's resignation as the American ambassador to the United Nations makes it official: The Bush administration is now drifting idly toward a mixture of centrism and impotence.

In less than a month, two of President Bush's stronger and more independent aides - Donald Rumsfeld and Bolton - have been dispatched. Rumsfeld's designated successor, former CIA head Robert Gates, is a leading member of the Beltway's permanent bureaucracy.

The administration seems to be waiting for the Baker-Hamilton commission of old Washington hands to dictate U.S. policy on Iraq. Leaks from the commission suggest it will recommend a gradual U.S. withdrawal camouflaged by negotiations with Iran and Syria over a new Mideast grand bargain.

All of this feeds an exaggerated defeatism in the United States over Iraq.

.....

Rumsfeld's abrupt firing was an act of flagrant disloyalty to a loyal subordinate. The defense secretary had made his share of mistakes - notably, his failure to crush looting immediately after the fall of Baghdad - but he had followed the president's policy faithfully.

.......

We don't know for certain the reasons for Bolton's departure: Either the White House wasn't prepared to fight for him, or he was no longer prepared to lend his voice to the diplomatic charade over Iran and North Korea. Either way, his departure demonstrates timidity on the administration's part. The net result will be that Bush has one less loyal subordinate in the shrinking ranks of his own administration.

Not to change the subject, but on the bright side, it appeared today that Lindsey Graham decided to grow a pair -- at least as far as his assessment of this ISG is concerned. Maybe there is hope yet? or he's been reading FR and knows people want him out for being such a weakling.

I look forward to a leader who admits as much and is willing to tell the testicularly-challenged editorialists of our Dead Tree Media just where they can go, and how.

It is an unfortunate fact of our time that a majority of Americans are wont to ignore the fact that we have been, and are now under attack. In retrospect, it should not be a surprise. America has been so privileged to have avoided being sacked by a horde of barbarians throughout her history, it has become inconceivable to consider the possibility of such an event.

Some see it, most don't. As in the past it will take a (another) serious blow for the idiots in the public square to comprehend.

No. Where did you hear that?

Not that I'd be very surprised to find out that's true.

I see the "true Conservatives" are playing their Menedez brothers act. They kill their parents and beg for mercy because they are orphans. It was these geniuses that have made all of this possible and now they are squealing like the pigs they are.

Like father like son.

The Dems will never DARE to impeach Bush. He's their perfect puppet.

Besides, if they impeached Bush, they'd have to deal with a real man - Dick Cheney - and they don't want that.

Expect Bush to collaborate with the Dems on a retreat from Iraq, judicial appointments, abortion, the Second Amendment, illegal aliens, affirmative action, you name it. He will become a worse enemy to the Republican party base than Nancy Pelosi.

On the other hand Europe had to fend off the Muslims how many times?? Two? and they saw Egypt and other formerly non-Muslim nations co-opted yet they still quietly allowed them to migrate in great numbers to their shores...

I'm at a loss; it looks like a coup to me.

Think back on the last 6 years...the steady and consistent attacks, from dangerous leaks of national security information to the childish name calling from the so called leaders of the left to the unprecedented use of retired military to attack a President during wartime. Everything, from our elections, to the executive branch have been wildly and irresponsibly attacked in an effort to destroy any faith or trust.

It is what's been called a Velvet Revolution and it's been going on since Bush became President. It hasn't resembled traditional party politics for a long, long time. And I still wonder who and what is behind it all.

No matter what the report says, I think President Bush should assign Vice President Cheney to implement any portion of it that Cheney, with Rumsfeld as his primary consultant, believes to be useful -- and then take the entire Iraq Study Group on a hunting trip.

How many times do you intend to post that unoriginal thought? Did you get that from a flashfax from the DNC?

The Bush administration is the opposite of the month of March: It started as a lion but will end as a lamb.

I'm sure.

I want to reiterate another important fact again. We must not cave in to liberal ideology. It has gotten us nowhere, and them everywhere.

You are a punk.

Thank you ever so much for the self deprecating gratuitous solicitation! Since this is a public forum subject to the scrutiny of a myriad number of conservatives that seek to engage in a civil discourse, such adulation is certain to draw many more grassroots conservatives to FR. On the other hand, this type of commentary may be flagged by a common enemy that seeks to impose their control.

One of the uncomfortable aspects of portraying the "devils advocate". This is a conservative forum, not a GOP forum. The recent events and baseless attacks have decisively proved that the weak-willed GOP does not have the sack to go on the offensive and stay true to the party of Lincoln.

I agree, term limits would be great, imagine kennedy having to give up his seat. Of course someone like that would be grandfathered in, but knowing it would never happen again is a good thing.
