Mary Cheney, the vice president's openly gay daughter, is pregnant. She and her partner of 15 years, Heather Poe, are "ecstatic" about the baby, due in late spring, said a source close to the couple.
It's a baby boom for grandparents Dick and Lynne Cheney: Their older daughter, Elizabeth, went on leave as deputy assistant secretary of state before having her fifth child in July. "The vice president and Mrs. Cheney are looking forward with eager anticipation to the arrival of their sixth grandchild," spokesman Lea Anne McBride said last night.
Cheney, 37, was a key aide to her father during the 2004 reelection campaign and now is vice president for consumer advocacy at AOL. Poe, 45, a former park ranger, is renovating their Great Falls home.
News of the pregnancy will undoubtedly reignite the debate about gay marriage. During the campaign, Mary Cheney was criticized by gay activists for not being more publicly supportive of same-sex marriage. Her father said people "ought to be free to enter into any kind of relationship they want to" but deferred to the president's policy supporting a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages. Cheney herself called the proposed amendment "a gross affront to gays and lesbians everywhere" in her book, "Now It's My Turn: A Daughter's Chronicle of Political Life," which was published in May.
Cheney has described her relationship with Poe -- whom she took to last year's White House dinner honoring Prince Charles and Camilla-- as a marriage. The two met in 1988 while playing ice hockey and began dating four years later. They moved from Colorado to Virginia a year ago to be closer to Cheney's family.

I think you're confused about how babies are conceived. It has little to do with brains, and much to do with glands. "Making love with our minds" is a little too New Age for me.
Granted, if two intelligent people breed, maybe the combination of "nature and nurture" will tend to produce an intelligent offspring. But I don't think your choice of Ann Coulter and Michele Malkin has anything to do with their brains, frankly... tell me, would have said that if they looked like Helen Thomas and Hillary Clinton, two very intelligent but not-so-nearly-good-looking women?
See? Glands.
I sent you a private message...but since you were not polite enough to reply to me privately...here goes....
You said you have a Democrat wife.
My take: you are putting your kids in jeopardy.
On the one hand you have Mary Cheney and her partner of 15 years raising a child, and on the other you have Briteny Spears delivering two children in holy wedlock with her husband Kevin Federline.
My money is on the Cheney child to grow up far more positively.
For some reason, I did not receive your private message.
Looks at this point that we have a liberal boy and a conservative girl.
And I still have time to work on da Boy!
And mom and dads have a pretty poor track record of staying together THROUGH the raising of kids. I'm talking the kids are at least 18.
Oh, I knew that. Actually my response was in that same vein of perhaps-too-subtle humor.
It's 3:25AM here, I should stop posting and go to bed... ;-)
Too late for humor.
Off to bed with that very liberal wife of mine!
My wife is a flaming left-libertarian; was a radical liberal in college long ago, now much more of a fiscal and political conservative; e.g. she joined the NRA a few years before I did, having decided (correctly) that firearms were appropriate to her lifestyle. Hell if I know how she votes these days.
Our daughter (13) is looking like a Goldwater conservative at this point, with strong environmental leanings, and a keen sense that the government should stick to the Constitution and Keep It Simple Stupid.
So don't worry about your Democrat spouse. Just exemplify your conservative principles and be willing to debate on any topic. At least, that's my best take on it for now...
The turkey baster.
Based on my (dim) recollection of lovers in my (more liberal) college days, you have chosen well!
There's fodder for a three-part joke in there somewhere, but maybe tomorrow...
The child might not have been conceived that way. Sometimes people know the donar and sometimes it's done naturally.
> The turkey baster.
Unfortunately true (although I doubt it was a literal turkey baster).
Kids, both girls and boys, benefit from the presence of a loving and responsible father in the home. While I don't think it's my place to judge, I do feel that Mary's child will not do as well as if s/he had a father around.
Of course, the kid's grandfather will be pretty kick-ass, so that will make up for some of the loss!
They still have a mom and dad, not a mom and mom. In fact what are the demographics of same sex relationships compared to normal relationships?
I doubt it was a literal turkey baster too, but it was a question begging for an answer, even at 1:40a.m. ;)
No longer her husband. They're divorcing already. The second kid is only months old. It's a travesty. Then again, Federline is an unmitigated a$$hole, and probably the kids are better off without his negative and irresponsible influence.
> My money is on the Cheney child to grow up far more positively.
I totally agree.
Well, how special. Now that they've invited us into their bedroom or exam room or wherever the deed was done.....hopefully, they won't feel the need to chirp about every little detail up to and including the blessed birth.
TMI
3:40AM back East here.
It's probably a good thing that my imagination isn't well-rested, because I'd be conjuring up visuals that aren't particularly respectful to the folks involved...
There are loads of fatherless children, some male relative or close friend makes up the difference. Mary Cheney's baby will indeed have a grandfather who is involved in his grandchild's life.
