One in Four Smokers Will Get Lung Disease

TUESDAY, Oct. 17 (HealthDay News) -- A new study finds that at least 1 in every 4 smokers will develop progressive and incurable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a much higher risk than previously believed.

COPD is a respiratory disease that results in blocked air flow to the lungs and grows progressively worse.

For this study, published online in the journal Thorax, researchers at Hvidovre Hospital analyzed data on 8,000 men and women, ages 30 to 60. All were monitored for 25 years as part of the Copenhagen City Heart Study.

At the start of the study, all the participants' lungs were healthy and working normally. However, over the course of the 25 years, the lungs of almost all the male non-smokers continued to function normally, compared to 60 percent of men who continued to smoke.

Among women, 90 percent of non-smokers still had healthy lungs at the end of 25 years, compared to 70 percent of smokers.

Overall, 25 percent of the participants developed moderate or severe COPD over the 25 years. Persistent smokers were six times more likely to develop COPD than non-smokers.

During the 25 years, there were 2,900 deaths in the study group. Of those deaths, 109 were directly attributable to COPD, and nearly all those deaths were in people who were active smokers at the start of the study. Only two non-smokers died of COPD.

The study also found a sharp decline in the risk of COPD among people who stopped smoking soon after the start of the study. Over the 25 years, none of these ex-smokers developed severe COPD.

Keeping them in a bubble? What does that have to do with inheriting the allergy gene? That is where asthma comes from. You think kids develop asthma because they are kept too clean, or is it because they are hysterical? You are so ignorant that it is difficult to discuss this with you. Good night, I am tired and you are tiresome.

I find that bars in the woods are pretty much ignoring the non-smoking requirements? You?

Nope. No smoking inside.......now you can't get through the twenty feet of solid smoke to get to the door of any bar. I hate to tell some of the restaurant and bar owners, but it has been years since they could smoke inside, so maybe they need to paint or wash the walls or something. rme

Um...according to Oxford, asthma is most closely associated with hospital birth. IOW, it comes from being to clean.

You have other evidence?

here's why I support a flat (not "Fair") tax. A fixed percentage off the top...and then you do what you like with the rest.

Well, then. Why not a "head" tax?

Just take the federal / state budget, divide it by the population, and send everybody a bill?

That's the most "fair" way and "flat" way, and the way most assured way to foment a revolution (BTW, I am a huge advocate of the "Fair" tax).

That does however, negate your cigarette tax argument and preference.

Ignorance is curable.

Willful stupidity and / or arrogance is not. Good night.

I think sticking to your old wives tale of tobacco smoke curing your infant sisters asthma is about as stupid as a person can get and you are pretty arrogant about it.

I don't see how #256 negates anything about cigarettes. You pay yer flat tax...you can spend the rest on anything you want..no penalties.

There are cities that announce the Air Quality Index on the evening weather report, with special alerts from time to time.

Mostly cities around mountains...Los Angeles, Seattle, Denver....

The geography traps low temp air under high temp air, creating a temperature inversion. It is a visible effect...we can't see the mountains when it happens.

But then, I'm not paying any of "your" taxes.

Big disappointment to you, I'm sure.

Okay...now you're making no sense.

Premise...any tax is passed on to other consumers.

Factor that into a flat tax.

Execute flat tax.

Anything left...spend on cigs, gas, FReerepublic, whatever...no further penalites, whatever your vice.

Okay...after thought...NOW I get your point.

Yes, I am grateful you are paying my taxes NOW.

No...I want to see a flat tax to have that changed.

K?

That's one in every 800 that died directly of COPD. Not bad. One-eighth of one percent. I wonder if that's even statistically significant?

That's why we never take these articles at face value.  It's great not being easily swayed, isn't it?

:)

When someone attacks me, I become defensive. When they attack me for a LEGAL habit that I enjoy, I get angry as well. When they start with the name-calling, I quit listening.

That's how "I" feel, too.  If they think I will just sit here and take it, they have another thought coming.

I never thought that Free Republic allowed little 14 year old juveniles in here, but I guess I was wrong.  Either that, or these kids are using daddy's screen name!  heh!

.......wonderfully acceptable in exchange for their "right" to engage in a dirty, offensive, smelly, dangerous-to-others; selfish-to-loved-ones habit.

Boy, for a religious person, you sure are full of hate for other Conservative's who happen to enjoy a legal product.

How DO you live with yourself!!!

Judge not my friend.  Judge not!
