It would have been irresponsible not to call local English authorities. This man could have rampaged through English as well as Amish communities.

If they really worship at the altar of utter non-violence and pacifism, then, from their point of view, it ought to be immoral to appeal to a violent authority [such as a police department] to protect them from someone who wishes to visit violence upon them [and upon their loved ones].
I just don't get the Amish reasoning here [and, quite frankly, it seems to me that there is no reasoning - the Amish position, if I understand it correctly, seems to be internally inconsistent].
