I hope the media still has enough integrity, character, and conscience to honor those requests.
What's interesting is that a lot of people feel that all the publicity of what happened could fuel another type of shooting spree and maybe it can.
Perhaps what the media could do, if it ever felt inclined to exhibit any common sense, would be to focus on the victims and totally ignore any mention of the perp after the intial identification.
This is news and people care and want to help and should know what's going on, but it the spotlight was off the perp and his perversions, that just might help with these guys knowing they won't be going out in a blaze of glory but rather sink into oblivion.
But do they believe in calling in the police to do their fighting for them?
It would have been irresponsible not to call local English authorities. This man could have rampaged through English as well as Amish communities.
A columnist for the Philly Daily News is already engaging in such (there is already a movement for gun control laws because of the violence level in Philly).
John Baer | Can they dismiss this one?
AS LAWMAKERS meet in the Capitol today for Day 3 of an unusual session on violent crime, perhaps yesterday's schoolhouse slaughter in nearby Lancaster County will help make deliberations a little more serious.
I wouldn't call the Amish pacifists
The Amish are Anabaptists, like the Mennonites, the Hutterites and a few other splinters. They along with the Quakers are the original peace churches and are well known for their pacifist works.
Prayers up for the families of the victims.
I agree! The spotlight is always on the perp.
I don't suppose media could just stick to facts and maybe give us some background, some teaching, about the Amish community while respecting their privacy . . . ?
Hindsight. We can look back now and see signs that COULD have tipped someone off, but still people do odd things occasionally and the vast majority don't go over the edge like this. You can't lock up EVERYONE who acts a little strange or moody once in a while.
IMO, there is really not much that anyone could have done to prevent this. It's just a matter of picking up the pieces and moving on and seeing what wwe can learn from it.
Thanks for that announcement. I would have missed it, for sure. It cleared up some lingering questions, and created a few more.
Continuing prayers for all the victims.
Those murdered children in Pennsylvania have NO relationship to those thousands of children murdered in the camps of Nazi Germany.
My profound apology.

The show of faith and support for their own speaks volumes as to the nature of the Amish community. They will grieve; pray and get on with their lives. I hope the media will back off and let the community hold their funerals privately.
Quit being a damned jerk. No one forced the Amish to not have guns in that school. And no government killed those poor Amish kids.
Thank you for the time and trouble to inform us about where to send donations.
Stop the spamming.
What amazed me, was at the press conference, Gov. Rendell said basically that some thing...that no amount of gun legislation; no wait periods, etc., nothing could have stopped the carnage...this surprisingly from the liberal, gun grabber, Fast Eddie. The killer had no prior police record. None.
Trinity, thicken up the skin there ok. I didn't say you were nutty. I said these posts about gun legislation in association with these school shootings is nutty. Don't take the comment as a personal attack, please.
I definitely won't disagree with you that the "hype" and "drama" of the news can cause an unstable person to think about acting out, knowing that it might be their 15 minutes of fame. I won't agree with you, though, that there is a clear association between these shootings and the way the media has covered them.
