Update: Multiple Shooting Victims and Possible Hostages in Lancaster County
Not many details available yet, but an incident has been reported from Mine Rd. in Bart Township in Lancaster County involving multiple gunshot victims. Dennis Buterbaugh reports live from our newsroom. abc27 has a news crew on the way. We will update with details as they become available.
Update 2: Pennsylvania Police: Amish School is 'Horrendous Crime Scene' After Shooting
NICKEL MINES, Pa. At least two female students and one slightly older female who may have been a teacher's aide were shot and killed execution style in what police say may be a revenge killing for something that happened 20 years ago.
State Police Commissioner Jeffrey Miller said Monday that truck driver Charles Carl Roberts IV entered the one-room Amish schoolhouse in earlier in the day. The gunman brought in pieces of wood to board up the doors to the building when he entered the school. He also stacked desks against the building's doors.
"It appears that the suspect entered school with the intention of taking hostages," Miller said.
Roberts had wire ties and plastic flex cuff, which he used to begin tying the hostages feet together after they were lined up along a blackboard. He let go 15 male students, as well as one adult female who was pregnant. Three other non-student females with infants were also allowed to leave. One shotgun and one handgun was found next to the suspect when police entered the building.
"It seems as though he wanted to attack young, female victims," Miller said.
After a half hour inside, Roberts began shooting. When the gunfire stopped, three females were found shot dead at the scene, along with the suspect, who shot himself, Miller said. At least seven more victims some critically wounded were transported to nearby hospitals, he said. One victim, a young girl, died in the arms of a trooper, Miller said. He could not confirm how many people died en route or at the hospital. The county coroner earlier reported six children killed but then backed off of that statement.
"There are only two ways to stop this sort of thing from happening in our schools. We either treat the school building like a maximum security prison, with everyone entering passing through metal detectors and body searches supervised by armed guards; or we arm the teachers and staff."
There is a third way that is growing in popularity: home education. Not so much because of safety concerns, but given events of the past few weeks, I wouldn't be surprised to see a sudden increase in interest.
I'd go with Manchurian Candidate.
I'm not a conspiracy nut who believes in MK Ultra and all that stuff, but if something like that DID come out, I guess it wouldn't surprise me...
Or maybe it is just that the devil is drawing a blanket of evil over America and it's intensifying now, for some reason.
What else could explain a normal, seemingly loving father, who would do this?
Ed
I sit here and cry as I think of all the times I have taken the back roads in Lebanon and Lancaster on my way home just to see the kids and wave back to them as they waved to me.
I have never met a sad Amish child.
Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for their families and cuddle their children in heaven.
You don't have to comprehend it, you just have to accept it. There are people out there that love to do this sort of thing. That is a fact.
glimpses of Satan unbound
Wow...great imagination! Most people would just go for the far more common mental-illness explanation!

Check his computer.
"You're a Freeper, that instantly qualifies you as smart enough to homeschool."
Amen to that.
You don't have to be a genius with a Ph.d to home educate your children. There are plenty of parents with high school educations that are doing a fine job of home educating and getting results that they are justifiably proud of.
Part of the propaganda spread by the government education establishment is that you need to have an advanced degree and training to teach children. Hmmm. So how do they explain the thousands of years of progress and education that occurred before government schools even existed? And I guess the 20-30% high school drop out rates that we're seeing are merely coincidental?
I suggest you get on the pinglists maintained by daveloneranger and tired of taxes if you want to learn more.
Thinks folks, and think really hard....
How did a nutter come to be able to own a firearm?
Our community is in shock.
A prayer vigil is set for 5:30-7:00pm at the Worship Center on New Holland Pike, near Leola on Tuesday.
Offer up prayers for our Amish neighbors.
May the girls souls rest in peace and the injured have God's hands protect them.
I guess you're local? We're about 15mi NW of Philadelphia...our prayers are with you.
Thanks dirtboy...that one sentence sums up so much of what makes this all the more tragic. A co-worker of mine lives about a mile from where this happened. He and I were pretty much in shock at what had happened; and certainly where. He often stops on his way to and from work taking digital photos of his traffic jams...they consist of herds of cows and sheep crossing the roads in Bart. He phoned me when he got home this afternoon, and needless to say the community is strong but shattered.
I looked for a while to find just the photo or portrait that would show those who may not know the Amish community; just the sheer innocence. The link under the photo has many more photos showing the Amish community. I have been close to tears many times today...words fail.
Yeah. Lifelong. Just north of Lancaster City, 15 miles NW of Strasburg and Bart Twp. is an area I know well.
"Madness. Insanity. Incomprehensible mayhem.
Our community is in shock."
My prayers are with the families of the victims and your community.
Such a beautiful area out there. Really really warm people too. I think somebody said it higher up in the thread...has anyone ever seen an unhappy Amish child? I always thought Amish girls were pretty cute...untainted by all the other crap in the world.
"I feel very sorry for the wife and family of this man so I will pray for them too. He must have been a very sick or evil person."
I'll pray for the family.
I question whether this was completely out of character for the child murdering scum in question. Leopards don't often change their spots.
I will certainly pass along the multitudes of kind comments and notices of prayers for those who have suffered in this macabre event to those in the Amish community I work with.
If this wasn't a sign of demonic posession, I'm not sure what could be. I mean, how could anyone have anything against Amish girls???
And that is what makes this that much more insane. No amount of psychological doublespeak can begin to explain the motive of this madman. Of all the victims this "person" could have targeted, these children are the most unfathomable.
