The following is the complete text of Mel Gibson's statement regarding his arrest for investigation of driving under the influence of alcohol:
"After drinking alcohol on Thursday night, I did a number of things that were very wrong and for which I am ashamed. I drove a car when I should not have, and was stopped by the L.A. County sheriffs. The arresting officer was just doing his job and I feel fortunate that I was apprehended before I caused injury to any other person.
"I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable. I am deeply ashamed of everything I said.
"Also, I take this opportunity to apologize to the deputies involved for my belligerent behavior. They have always been there for me in my community and indeed probably saved me from myself. I disgraced myself and my family with my behavior and for that I am truly sorry.
"I have battled the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse. I apologize for any behavior unbecoming of me in my inebriated state and have already taken necessary steps to ensure my return to health."
His publicist said he is ashamed - I doubt Mel crafted that statement himself.
Or an easier client. :)
he denied Terri medical therapy for years, that is a fact. Had she had it she might have improved, who's to say? Michael played God, that is a fact. He allowed his wife to be dehydrated to death. She was brain damaged, not brain dead and therefore she was alive and a human being who needed to be cared for till she passed naturally. Instead she was dehydrated to death. This is a fact! So, any other fact to this tragedy doesn't really matter besides the FACT a brain damaged woman was murdered! If you think that is ok that your just as sick as Michael Schiavo himself!! And truly, you are no Conservative. Conservatives believe in the value of life, whether it be a brain damaged woman or a baby in the womb!
Twist the facts for your own benefit...I don't care...
It indicates to me that Mel is still holding fast to his bigoted views, refusing to go the extra mile and cop to his attitude (unless intoxicated.) Just as when he stated that "lots of people died in WWII, some of them were Jews" - just as when he said his Holocaust-denying father "never lied to him", he skirts the core of the matter. He's really a classic anti-semite. How he managed to hide that in Hollywood is beyond me. He deserves a Best Actor Oscar just for that performance alone. :)
Jesus didn't engineer or arrange himself being put to death. He ACCEPTED and took on the sins of men, including the sin of some men who would put him to death. That sin of rejecting and killing Jesus was an embodiment of how all reject God through sin.
But, according to your theological interpretation, Jesus arranged for his own death, and "no one" other than himself was really responsible.
Hey, that's the theological interpretation you go by? Fine. Believe what you want. I say it's an old fallacy embodied by things like The Gospel Of Judas.
My argument takes the words of the Gospel to make the point. Jesus was crucified and put to death by men, not by no one. Accepting and taking on the sins of men does not mean men did not sinfully reject and crucify him.
Well, Mel will have plenty of opportunities in the upcoming days to either renounce or stand by his statements about Jews.
Not odd to me. I, like Pope John Paul, thought it powerful and accurate.
"The news service, which is affiliated with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops"... and that reported by CBS news?
Sorry. That's about definitive as the fake but accurate Bush national guard story. I'll stand with Pegg Noonan's article in WSJ:

There are a number of factors beyond pure BAC at play, and he doesn't need to be on anything else. Emotional state: perhaps he had an argument with his wife, or a distributor. He was drinking tequila - doesn't take much "ta kill ya" to start saying and doing stupid things. Fatigue: a sleepy drunk is weaker than an alert drunk. And sensitivity: some people are just more sensitive than others. A long term drunk is going to have a higher tolerance than a tea-toteller.
Then there is the possibility that the BAC was lowballed. Allegedly, the sheriff's office is going to be coming under scrutiny for trying to get the deputy to edit his report. Perhaps (hopefully not, but perhaps) the BAC figure was "edited".
This about that Council of Bishops from Noonan's article:
"This summer a group of scholars associated with the U.S. Bishops Council obtained an apparently stolen copy of an early draft of the script and came forward to denounce it as scripturally incorrect and potentially injurious of Christian-Jewish relations."
Appears they would have their own agenda in dusputing what the Pope may have said. And as for CBS?...
When has Mike apologized? I must have missed it.
I definitely agree with you.
No, I do NOT think what Mel did and said was appropriate. However, you seem to be the ONLY one person here on this Earth who is PERFECT. He apologized. What the heck more do you want?
It was a sincere aplogy. He did a heck of a lot more then Hillary and Cynthia and all the rest of your friends on the left.
Right! No special treatment for him!
According to biblical principles, sparing the rod spoils the child. Mel: Get thee hinder to the woodshed where we'll be waiting.
Whaaaat?
