I live in New York City, and the Rudy Era was a great time here in New York. Crime plummeted, tourists and businesses came back in droves and the streets were cleaned up of all sorts of garbage. I may not be a fan of Hollywood's politics, but their activities put money in the city's coffers. It is no exaggeration to say that Rudy was the best thing to happen to this city in my lifetime. Post-Dinkins, NYC needed somebody with an iron fist to come in and clean house. Guiliani did it better than anybody could have imagined.
But the country is not NYC and does not need Rudy's iron fist pounding on it.
I will vote for just about anybody but McCain over Rudy in the primaries. If he gets the nomination, I'll reluctantly vote for him over Hillary, only because he will prosecute the war on terrorism with vigor at least equal to Bush. I'll just hope the constitution can survive the onslaught President Guiliani will lead on it domestically.

Watch for the Rudyphiles to start the "Abortion is not a Presidential issue" rant.
As JLA posted: Not only is it a Presidential issue, it is one that RR never shied away from in going on to win the biggest electoral landslide in Presidential election history.
This book came out the year leading up to the 1984 election----the time I believe many conservatives would pinpoint as the era the struggling Republican party became a majority party DUE TO THEIR PRO-LIFE POSITION.

If he is our best hope , we are in trouble . Allen is a good Conservative ,but he lacks charisma which translates into losing .

Let me repeat my question: who can you name that meets every one of your conservative standards? I cannot speak for Tommy but here might be a good place to look for alternatives.

I see all the dates on your quotes are from the 80s and early 90s. Look at what Rudy has done as Mayor of NYC. His accomplishments were fantastic. His positions on gay rights, abortion and other social issues are important, but not so much for a President. As a libertarian, I do not think Roe will ever be overturned. I don't like abortion, but I don't believe it should be criminalized.
Rudy has leadership and will make up for his social liberalism by being tough on security issues, law enforcement and national defense. He may not have been for school choice in 1989 in NYC, but what is his position now, since it has been tried and worked successfully in Milwaukee. As for taxes, I suspect that he will not advocate raising taxes, but will bring some measure of fiscal conservatism to DC (which he did in NYC). Our current Senate, House and President (GOP) have not shown much leadership in that area.

Let me repeat my question: who can you name that meets every one of your conservative standards? They can probably name a few, but none of them is electable. They won't have any appeal beyond the true believers who tout them.
Guiliani knows he's got a big hill to climb to attract enough support in the GOP to get nominated.
The good news for him is that he is viewed very favorably by the vast majority of Republicans, and has that goodwill to work with as he decides whether to run or not.
He's got a Reagan-style optimism that none of the other candidates have, and that will also work in his favor. And, he is the best speaker, bar none, of any candidate on the horizon.

You're pretty much echoing my sentiments, except that I could not bring myself to vote for him.

You need to understand that there are millions of Republicans out there in America who don't think the way New Yorkers think. Not only that, we don't LIKE the way New Yorkers think! And we certainly don't VOTE the way New Yorkers vote. Good grief -- you people elected Hillary Clinton to the Senate!

Our Senate Repubs do need a pounding.
I believe Rudy would pound away on tort reform,
vouchers(he speaks of them often}...tax reform...entitlement reform...spending.
He would supply tough day to competent conservative governance. Something that the current crew of Repubs seem incapable of.

Hitlery would be consigned to the dustbin of history if she had to run against an experienced old warhorse like Rudy.

Whether I do, or whether I don't, is not the question....you can certainly disagree with a person's view and thoughts on something, but to put something like that out is idiotic....
I don't like McCain, but I certainly wouldn't put something like that garbage out about him, or anyone else for a matter of fact....
Totally disgraceful, and I'm surprised the Moderator hasn't pulled the thread....totally disgraceful...

Thanks for the link. That's an interesting poll. FR members have Rudy leading 5 other Republicans with name recognition.
To: TommyDale
I understand that. Listen if Rudy was doing extremely bad in the polls in the South and Mid-West I would be the first to say - He will never win. People just don't like him. But they DO LIKE HIM. I've seen and read poll after poll and read reactions from people from Iowa to Georgia that they want Rudy to run. You can't beat that if you want to run. Now by the time 2007 comes along maybe Rudy will go down in the polls and someone else will beat him. We can never say what will happen. Only time will tell. Regardless I will vote for whomever the Republican nominee is.
Well my vote went to Lazio but that didn't do any good. I still vote Republican here and boy is it frustrating! LOL

That's an interesting poll. FR members have Rudy leading 5 other Republicans with name recognition. But not in the top 3. I understand your point but he has baggage that is anything but a conservative view point.

Dear sinkspur,
"The good news for him is that he is viewed very favorably by the vast majority of Republicans,..."
That's true. I like Rudy. Lots of the social conservatives I know like Rudy. All the homeschooling Catholics with which we hang think he was pretty cool as mayor of New York City.
If a pollster were to ask us our opinion of Mr. Giuliani, it would be very positive.
And absolutely none of us will vote for him for the presidency under any circumstances.
The liberals are going to vote for the candidate labeled "D". But a significant number of conservatives will not vote for Mr. Giuliani. He can't hold the Republican coalition together.
I don't see him able to win the nomination, and should he manage to put enough country club Republicans together to get the nomination, I don't think he'll win the general election.
