If the Union soldiers (from both north and south) preyed upon the soldiers, why did newly freed blacks follow the Union soldiers from Atlanta to the coast?
You are entitled to your own opinions, but not to your own facts.
Of course in any grouping of several million people, you will find some bad apples. The fact is, many free former slaves followed the Union forces on their march to the Sea.
On the other hand, was their any such similar movement when the rebel forces made their few abortive and murderous marches north?

The continuing uncontrolled rage of FR's most radical neo-confederate is easily explained due to the fact he is unable to cope with the real world of 2006. If he was asked what is transpiring in the Mid-East most likely he would somehow interlink events only within narrow confines of his self-inflicted, pre-1860, totally warped mindset.
in point of fact, the newly freed slaves would have followed ATTILA the HUN. they just wanted to leave the place of their servitude (who could have blamed them???).
in MANY THOUSANDS of cases they were raped, assaulted, tortured & all too frequently MURDERED by their "rescuers". as i said TOO MANY were "freed from LIFE" by the "filth in blue that came down from the north".
and FRANKLY, NOBODY in the DY high command made ANY serious attempt to punish the criminals. instead, they "turned their faces away" and/or covered up the war crimes.( in the case of the slaughter of my family, NOBODY in the union army cared a DAMN, as the raped/tortured/robbed/MURDERED were just "poor injuns" and to quote lincoln, "red savages without souls,who must be driven from our dominions or EXTERMINATED to the last one".)
sadly, i must tell you that the WAR CRIMES committed on the members of my family were FAR from unique! such CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY were COMMONPLACE!
