Yankee clauses dashed [Local landowner REALLY didn't like yankees...]
The Island Packet ^ | 07/06/2006 | JIM FABER

It appears that the Northern invasion of the South is complete -- at least it is on a patch of land known as Delta Plantation in Jasper County.

There, a diehard rebel named Henry E. Ingram Jr. made his last stand against the onslaught of Yankees, only to be thwarted by a man from Long Island, N.Y., and now -- gasp -- a French Canadian.

Ingram promised to keep Yankees out of Delta Plantation in Jasper County when he bought 1,700 acres there in 1998. His resolve to keep them out still is strong, but the covenants he put on the land don't seem to have any teeth.

Those covenants did, however, scare Canadian-raised Bluffton resident Louise Legare a bit as she was close to signing a contract to buy a three-bedroom, two-bathroom house on the land from Bluffton Home Builders.

The list of rules she got from the builders was missing the first pages, so she went to the Jasper County Courthouse to get the missing ones. There, she found the covenants, or rules, that Ingram demanded of buyers:

1. They could not be Yankees.

2. They could not have the last name Sherman (an obvious reference to Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman).

3. And the land could not be sold or leased to those whose last names could be rearranged to spell Sherman.

Clearly, Ingram doesn't like Northern folk.

Now, however, Legare and Bluffton Home Builders are working with Ingram's son, Ashley Ingram, to remove the covenants. The former Delta Plantation is on both sides of U.S. 17, just north of the Georgia state line.

"When (Legare) brought it to us, we all kind of had a good laugh," said Jim Hobbs, a partner in the home-building firm.

In fact, Legare is buying the land and home from Bill Cook, another partner in the company, who happens to be a native of Long Island, N.Y. No one at Bluffton Home Builders had seen the covenants before Legare found the missing pages, and no one has ever tried to enforce them, Hobbs said.

If Henry Ingram had his way, he still would keep Yankees off of the 1,700 acres he once owned. His holdings on the plantation have dwindled to 10 acres.

Ingram, now a resident of Corpus Christi, Texas, said his son and attorney, who are both local, should be looking out for his anti-northerner wishes now.

"Yankees destroy everything they have up North, then they come down here," Ingram said. "When they destroy everything (in the South), where are they going to move next? Another country?"

Legare, who grew up north of Montreal, figures her far-northern upbringing must be especially abhorrent to Ingram.

"I must be more of a Yankee," she said. "I'm the person he really doesn't want to live there."

Amazingly, Legare is a much better choice to own Southern land than a New Yorker, according to Ingram.

"French people are much better and more desirable than a Yankee," said Ingram, who once owned video-poker casinos in Jasper County. "They don't stick their noses in other people's business."

The same feature drew Legare and Ingram to the land -- nature. Ingram said he's seen Carolina panthers, bald eagles and fox squirrels on the land. It is that quiet beauty Legare is after.

"I was raised in a very nature-like environment," Legare said. "I think the nature is beautiful in South Carolina."

Ingram, who says he is leaving Texas for Costa Rica soon, cites the boorish manners of Yankees as one of his prime dislikes for them.

"They look down their little pointy noses at the people in the South because we are polite and nice to them," Ingram said. "They think people who are polite and nice are dumb."

LINCOLN BABY said NO, "I want to bring the South to her knees"

Considering that the normal position of the racist, slave-owning, ignorant and backward South was face down in the mud, Lincoln was pretty generous to want to lift the South up to her knees.

So your point of view is that California can change the rules to collect taxes in Texas when ever they want.

Call the Governator! New Revenue Stream!

I want to clarify one thing about by statement of the South being content to live inert in the mud of a hog pen. I'm not talking of the Southern people who didn't bow the knee to the Confederate slave power, nor the South of the oppressed slaves nor even the South of the misled and misused Confederate rank and file. I'm talking about the degenerate slave-holding mentality that ran the Confederate show for their own private benefit.

Even Lee recognized the degrading nature of the institution.

Too bad Reconstruction did not permanently break the power of the Southern "elite". Almost everyone would have been better off.

I have seen enough evidence to convince me that if he is, in fact, claiming 100,000 free black confederate soldiers then he is, in fact, an idiot.

No, he's not an idiot. He's an amateur historian who has gathered a bunch of anecdotal stories together. He never makes any claim like 100,000 black confederate volunteer combatants. He does throw out similarly impressive numbers, but admits that those are mostly slaves who were leased by their owners to dig ditches, build forts, etc. , but which he counts as contributing to the confederate war effort.

Again, Watie lies.

Well that is quite nice of you to be impressed with my scholarly tone. But do you really think I give a rip how impressed you are with my scholarly tone? And, perhaps you neglected to view other recent posts on this thread. I shall repeat them for the sake of brevity...I am not the one in need of proof therefore I do not need to prove a thing as I have done my research and am quite aware of what is necessary to be known. If you desire proof, go to the library and find the appropriate books and read them! Anything else unclear?

IF, you ever want to have a legitimate conversation with me, you best drop all NASTY and DEGRADING referrences to the South, Southern People, Southern Food, or Southern Anything. Just keep all dislikes to yourself when speaking to me, as I am quite uninterested in any nasty and/or degrading posts...

Sorry about the misunderstanding. I guess I failed. I try to limit my negative comments to the degenerate slave aristocracy and its successors and its later influence. Not to everything about the South.

Why, I am a 100% biological (if not in principle or officially) Son Of a Confederate Veteran!!! I have a great great grandpappy whose name is on a local SCV's "Wall of Honor" of CSA vets down in Georgia. For some reason, I've never felt like joining the SCV though I suspect many of not most of the SCV members disagree with the anti-Lincoln nonsense I've learned about on this message board.

But I try not to denigrate the memory of great grandpappy and the other exploited suckers for slavery who fought for the CSA. My contempt is only with the principles of Slavery Inc., aka the CSA.

I don't think it is possible to degrade the antebellum south. Rather, they did that job themselves.

Melanie and Aunt Pittypat discuss the latest victories for glorious Southern arms while Ashley thinks he might need to find a slave to help him blow his nose.

"I don't think it is possible to degrade the antebellum south. Rather, they did that job themselves."

No, Mr. Meaker, you are quite wrong. For you to make such a statement shows how uniformed you are. For some reason, the thought exists that if one pretends like it wasn't Lincoln's responsibility to uphold our constitution and not war against the country, all will be well. Seems like its the thinking that a good defense is an excellent offense. Well, this isn't a football game eventhough you are apparently playing it like one. Well, I don't like football, so there is obviously nothing to discuss...

So, do you feel it was a good idea of Lincoln to uphold the Constitution in South Carolina?

Or do you feel South Carolina was a separate country?

He never makes any claim like 100,000 black confederate volunteer combatants.

So the 100,000 free black figure was attributed to the wrong idiot?

Do you suppose it's possible that stand himself has not read the book?

nope. but the state of CA can LAWFULLY leave the union on its own. NO PLACE in the Constitution is secession prohibited!

the 10th amendment makes it clear, even to a blind man, that those "powers not ceded" to the federal government remain POWERS of the states/people. (fwiw, despite what we hear in the media, states do NOT have RIGHTS, but ONLY powers. only citizens have RIGHTS!)

secession was NEVER ceded & thus remains a power of each state.
