He has soul now and had soul from the start. He's got a great voice. I am so excited to have his CD. And I'll be buying Do I Make You Proud...... I thought that was the perfect song for Taylor.

"What really tickled me about that Toni Braxton debacle was the way Taylor jerked his hand off her hip like it had been scalded!"

A woman of her enflated ego had probably had her people tell Taylor he'd best not TOUCH her or there would be consequences!

Taylor sure showed his professionalism in that performance.

She said she was surprised by how theatrical Meatloaf was and that she had to bring herself to his level. I got the impression she was trying to be 'polite'.

Meatloaf's stuff from the 70's and 80's was very theatrical. He is clasically trained IIRC. I despise his music because I worked somewhere with a jukebox and drunk idiots decided to play "Paradise By The Dashboard Lights" 1 million times in a row every weekend. I'd rather carve my eyes out with a spoon than listen to that song. But I digress. He music is very theatrical so I think Kat was being very honest (and she was correct despite his horrible performance last night).

The American Idol Live Thread is like Free Republic's version of the Algonquin Round Table -- some of the wittiest, classiest and most urbane of FR gather to discuss matters of utmost cultural importance, such as Constantine's tongue and the proliferation on melisma in modern singing.

I truly think this thread is a sparkling gem in the pavement of the information superhighway!

Did you see my template for writing an American Idol Coronation Song I posted yesterday? That explains it all.....;-)

I'm almost completely positive that was a Rhonetta impersonator. (And, no, I never thought there would be a job market for that!)

Trying to be polite? I can understand that in one way, since Meatloaf really stunk up the joint with that particular performance (though I will never forget him in Rocky Horror! LOL!). But I thought *her* performance in that song was the best thing I'd seen her do all season. Whatever brought her to that, she should do more of it.*

*JHMO, of course, as all my postings are. :)

HAH! I'll bet you're right! Her "people" had probably told him "DO NOT TOUCH MISS BRAXTON" so when she did that suddenly, it scared him to death. Heh heh. Pretty funny. I ran that back a couple of times just to see his reaction.

Couple of things on Kat:

1) When there is no pressure she is quite good. Very relaxed. She puckers up when its time to sing for votes.

2) My wife (trained singer) was yelling at the TV about how horribly off-key Meatloaf was. Then she raved about how incredible Kat was to stay on key while he was murdering the song.

Agree with you on both points. I've seen that in Kat all season -- she was invariably much better on results night, when she didn't actually have to sing for votes. Too bad; I think that cost her.

And I agree with your wife -- it is incredibly hard to keep going correctly when someone right in your ear is way off in another dimension note-wise! That was part of why I gave such props to Kat for that performance. As I said, if I'd seen that kind of performance from her earlier on, I might have had to change my votes a bit. (Though I'm still glad Taylor won! :)

He was thinking of the children In the Ghetto, and Toni was just thinking about giving some Ghetto Booty.

jonny, thanks so much for keeping these threads going, which I know have been a HUGE undertaking. Love your photos to illustrate the ping message, too.

I haven't been able to participate much, but I've read every single message this year.

Loved Taylor from the start - you can't keep that kind of joy and passion down, eh? I'm very happy for him. Even the waiters where I was having dinner last night (the TV's sound was down because of the restrictions in public places) were coming up and saying, "I want Taylor to win!"

And I was just so tickled to see Clay last night - could have used less of "The Next Clay Aiken Y'All." :-) I liked his new hair - changing it up a bit! Maybe they did that to draw a contrast with the "Old Clay" look of the wannabe.

I did buy a couple of tickets to the Sacremento show in late August - I'll be bringing my son, who should have a blast, I think. Gotta see Taylor, Elliott and Mandisa!

I had totally blocked that guy out of my mind until they showed him again last night. He had me laughing so hard when Clay walked out!! He just about fell down when he realized Clay was there.
