Fossil gives clue to big chill
BBC News ^ | Friday, 21 April 2006 | Helen Briggs

The gateway between the Atlantic and Pacific at the bottom of the globe opened up 41 million years ago, according to a study of old fish teeth.

The research in Science pushes back the date of the forging of Drake Passage to twice as long ago as once thought.

US geologists believe it kick-started the ocean current that swirls around Antarctica, helping to bring about a dramatic cooling effect.

The continent was transformed from lush forest to the icy landscape of today.

keep looking at these science articles and you will go mad: Fish teeth and global ice age..yep thats the ticket..facts built on thin air - put if far enough out in space or far enough back in time and who can argue with it?

Let me guess, fish teeth grew longer after they finnished chewing this passage.

This proves then that global cooling was a bad thing that destroyed the lush green earth and turned it into a desolate barren deep freeze for billions of years. How swirling warm water makes the earth cool down is still a mystery though. The catastrophic event theory of the fountains of the deep makes much more sense, and doesn't take billions of years, and better explains how elephants, hippo's, wolves and other animals were suddenly frozen in their tracks in what is now Siberia. I agree, it's far better to remain ignorant about the world. Why are you reading this thread?? You might catch truth cooties!

Well, it seems that with todays 'global warming' we are living in time where the old 'pristine' enviroment is being restored.

How do wacked out theories make you less ignorant? Unless of course you accept them as truth with absolutely no proof at all. First you have to establish if thse 'fish teeth' are even fish teeth, and that they could somehow be billions of years old. why, just last week one of these "science" articles claimed proof that the rate of carbon in the atmosphere was NOT constant throughout all time, so how could you possibly date anything with any sort of accuracy? Not that it's was ever established as acurate in the first place, considering you calibrate the thing with old sticks thought to be of a certain geological age.

Believing all these silly "science" artivles will not make you any less ignorant, just more confused.

"Well, it seems that with todays 'global warming' we are living in time where the old 'pristine' enviroment is being restored."

My thoughts exactly. Good time lay ahead, no more freezing our Butts off, which means less burning of those evil "fossil fuels". This should make all the enviro-nuts very happy, but what do they want? They want to keep the world colder. They are very confused, probably from reading too many of these weekly "science" updates.

You might be more convincing if you were less ignorant.

There is no such thing as fish teeth billions of years old because fish weren't around billions of years ago.

Even supposing fish were around billions of years ago, the carbon content of the atmosphere would be entirely irrelevant because carbon dating can only date things to 50,000 years maximum.

I'm afraid I'm not particularly impressed. You're going to have to do better than that if you expect to convince me that our vast body of scientific knowledge is all wrong.

ConsentofGoverned, are you sure you read the article? I'm trying to find the part about billions of years old fish.

I think NZ isn't aware of the differences between isotopic carbon dating and isotopic oxygen ratios, which indicate climate history. He also may have a clinical fear of mass spectrometers.

Huh did you read my post?? much less the article. Billions of years where did you get that quote?? Oh I know from fish teeth that told you I said that.LOL

I'm still trying to figure out why you think that the article says this happened billions of years ago when it clearly says about 40 million years ago.

Ignorant? Everything is billions of years old, didn't you know? If a theory doesn't sem to fit, add a few billion years to it, then it fits.

I don't have to "convince" you of anything, nor do I need to try. The "vast body" of science (group of elitists who control the scientific journal entries) IS wrong, all you have to do is look at the information to figure that out. If you took the time to see just how many discoveries are quietly swept under the rug because it contradicts the theories of this "main body of science" (eg group of elitists) You'd be amazed.
Even the THEORY (yes in this day and age, that's what it is)of what the earth is made of is wrong, old and outdated. They can't even figure out what causes the magnetic north and south poles. Why? Because it would require their throries to be scraped.
Here's something of interest which will perhaps give you food for thought.

Myteries of the inner earth

No one is saying fish are billions of years old except you.

What's your educational background?

Oh, and you were present to ensure that these isotopic oxygen rates were in fact what they claim they were, from ice core samples no less, which you have no idea how old they may be, because you have no idea how much snow may have fallen from one year to the next, or if any at all fell for 100's years or a thousands, or if a thousand feet fell in a single year. You take these theories and swallow them whole without even questioning whether or not they are at least based on sound rational theories. Then there are many other geological events which coulkd occur during any one of those ice core years, or several times, or for a period of time that could effect all these 'readings' which you so eagerly accept as evidence towards the state of the worlds climate, when in fact in may not even come close to representing. You can believe what you want, but don't dare call it scientific proof of anything. If you want to believe your ancestors were fish, that's just fine with me. Mine weren't.

"Unless of course you accept them as truth with absolutely no proof at all."

Can you prove that Jesus was born from a virgin, that He walked on water, or that He was resurrected?

P.S. Quoting from The Bible is not proof.

I guess some people are so dry they have no sense of humor at all, and can't pick up on the sarcasm in the use of billions instead of 41 million year old fish that ate a channel between the oceans so water could circulate. I don't know why they didn't simply get out of the water and walk to the other ocean like other fish. I guess they didn't want to turn into humans.

You apparently have not read the article and have no intention of doing so. However, you feel perfectly competent to ridicule it.

You aren't.
