WASHINGTON Accusing politicians of "pounding their chests" on immigration for short-term political gain, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said Tuesday that the tone of the debate had been "hurtful" to him and his Mexican-born wife, Columba.
Bush, the younger brother of President Bush, reserved some of his sharpest criticism for conservatives in his own Republican Party, calling it "just plain wrong" to charge illegal immigrants with a felony, as a provision passed by the Republican-led House would do. He also opposed "penalizing the children of illegal immigrants" by denying them U.S. citizenship, an idea backed by some conservatives but not included in the legislation.
"My wife came here legally, but it hurts her just as it hurts me when people give the perception that all immigrants are bad," the Florida governor wrote in an e-mail exchange with The Times.

At least that are willing to admit in public, I agree.
People wanting it stopped temporarily to avoid having the American citizens overtaken as resident of this country is not the same as people having a problem with legal immigrants.
Based on the number of mexicans in the U.S. already we shouldn't allow another single legal immigrant from mexico for the next 20 years. They have already well exceeded their quota. The same should apply to every other nationality, if there are more of them here than their quota cut them off.
You're pretty pathetic, quite frankly. You start a vanity to troll for a few responses to bolster your side of the debate. That is why I didn't post my opinion on that thread - I smelled a rat (oh, and I don't have a problem with legal immigration - my ex-wife was a legal immigrant).
And now you use that trolling to try and paint the other side as being against all immigration. That is low.
You really are a hoser, pulling crap like that. There are always a few outliers in a debate. And now you use those to imply that everyone else feels that way.
That is akin to Clinton saying that McVeigh represented how conservatives believed about government. And it is just as sorry.
It's hurtful to me when 12-20 million illegal aliens invade America and dopes like Jeb and his brother encourage them to keep on invading. George Bush could have enforced our borders BUT HE CHOSE NOT TO.
I live in FL so have voted for both since the Democrats are worse. But these brothers are gated community, country club republicans all the way when it comes to illegal aliens
We probably do :-)
Too much brown skin is not to your liking.
I understand EXACTLY where you're coming from.
Interesting that you keep repeating the same post (is that spamming?)
A few people are against it, so what?

Leave it to the OBL to equate border crashing with a speeding ticket. Kudos! for showing who and what you're really about.
5. is the one I think should be pushed first and hardest.
He has failed to uphold his oath of office, not through negligence but intentionally. He has willfully allowed a mass invasion of unwelcome foreigners into this country and done nothing to stop it.
In addition his global visions on the future of our nation cannot possibly co-exist with maintaining our national sovereignty.
The fact that he's being called a traitor is of his own making.
I love it. You start a vanity to solicit opinions about legal versus illegal immigration and now use it as a debating point. That's pretty low. The strong majority of those opposed to Jeb and George W. Bush on the immigration issue are against illegal immigration.
Guess who send us the most legal immigrants. Mexico!
And mostly due to family re-unification so we import Mexico's poor and uneducated.
Legal immigration needs major reforms so that it's skill based same as Canada, Australia and New Zealand. There are educated English speaking Europeans, Asians and Hindus who would love to immigrate here. But are crowded out by the crude and uneducated of Mexico and Central and Latin America
Clarence, I don't see how getting people to respond to that *other* thread is evidence...
If you want to claim that YES, there are people against Legal immigration, and that YES, they may even frequent FR, go ahead on my FRiend, claim all you want. I bet there are even people who believe in UFOs, Elvis, and fat free French Fries.
Please move off of it and go what I *think* this thread is about, a politician - who happens to the President's brother - unfortunately clouding the discussion by apparently grouping illegals with legal immigrants in his email to the LA Times and labeling them all as immigrants.
Thank you. Carry on.
Here's another screamer, MM.
We are not importing 15 million engineers and scientists and doctors.
Maybe not 15 million, but we ARE importing engineers and scientists and doctors to do the work that a shrinking supply in those professions are not there to do.
What was your previous screen name?
I always had alot of respect for the Bush family, have attended a speech Barbara Bush gave on literacy and shook her hand and was proud. I didn't think Bush 1 was a great President, as he was more liberal than I liked, but I still thought he was doing what he thought was right. But now, I'm having a very difficult time, and I fear that very soon I'm going to have to admit to my liberal friends that I was wrong.
