WASHINGTON Accusing politicians of "pounding their chests" on immigration for short-term political gain, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said Tuesday that the tone of the debate had been "hurtful" to him and his Mexican-born wife, Columba.
Bush, the younger brother of President Bush, reserved some of his sharpest criticism for conservatives in his own Republican Party, calling it "just plain wrong" to charge illegal immigrants with a felony, as a provision passed by the Republican-led House would do. He also opposed "penalizing the children of illegal immigrants" by denying them U.S. citizenship, an idea backed by some conservatives but not included in the legislation.
"My wife came here legally, but it hurts her just as it hurts me when people give the perception that all immigrants are bad," the Florida governor wrote in an e-mail exchange with The Times.

I support you 100% on this.
Looks like Jeb screwed up. This illegal justification is so frustrating.
Yes.
A loon is a noble animal. A goon is, well, it's something else.
"Oh this hurts me personally?" "Anti immigrant faction?" " non documented workers?". This whole framing of the argument is bull.
Holy Toledo, I agree with you!
I never said majority - there are at least a couple dozen here, which I can extrapolate to the population as a whole though.
If only he would follow the Gipper on Mexican illegals (sigh).
Wow! Thought I stumbled into DU for a second there.
Granted.. They would..
There are many things to consider though..
Firstly, Africa is an AIDS "hell".. It is rampant..
So, everyone would have to be subjected to health exams..
Secondly, their culture is totally foreign..
Many don't understand simple things like not leaving the baby in the car.. ( I know, we've got native-born americans that can't comprehend the concept either..)
Third, religious belief.. A lot of muslims..
I have a problem with importing muslims.. sorry, just a sign of the times, I guess, but it's a problem..
I'd be a lot more willing to offer those jobs to say, Vietnamese, Thai, Laotian, or Indonesians..
If it's just a "black" thing, then how about Brazilians? There are plenty of black Brazilians..
You got exactly the response I knew you'd get.
The only thing I haven't seen yet (I'm halfway through) is that Jeb is a Catholic puppet dancing on Cardinal Mahoney's strings.
For all those who thought Mahoney was a lone Indian among the Catholic hierarchy, read what Archbishop Chaput of Denver has to say on the issue. (It's up in the religion forum) It's almost indistinguishable from what Mahoney has said.
The only sanctimonious righteousness I see on this thread is from Jeb, who is deliberately blurring the debate.
We have commented on FR time and time again that the answer of the Dems to failure is to demand we do more of what has failed in the past.
So what is President Bush wanting to do regarding illegal immigration? More of what has failed in the past. We've passed new laws in the past that simply don't get enforced. We've granted amnesty in the past and it just led to more illegals coming here and hoping for the next amensty. We've done it Bush's way for two decades - and the problem has gotten worse. Doing more of what has failed should not be a GOP approach.
What we need to do is more of what has worked. Build more fencing - where strong fencing has been built, it has worked. Improve enforcement. Crack down on employers hiring illegals. And work to eliminate government-paid benefits to illegals.
That is what the GOP House wants - and they are the most representative of the GOP base. Bush has drifted further and further away from the base, as have the likes of McCain and Specter. Nothing less than the future of the GOP is at stake - and ironically over the stubborn desire of key pubbies to demand that we do more of what fails.
LOL
Anyone who blurrs the line between legal immigrants and illegal aliens is using the issue for something....
susie
"You got exactly the response I knew you'd get."
So, do you think I'm "bear baiting" too much? I sort of get a guilty pleasure out of it. Maybe that's wrong.
Is a misdemeanor a "crime"? Is running a stop sign a "crime"?
Even the Republicans in the House are scrambling like mad to insist that immigration violations are misdemeanors, not felonies.
Come on now, yesterday you all were hoping he would replace Katherine in the Senate race and today you drop him like a hot patato. Was it something he said? ROTFLMAO.
By the way, I agree with all of you, but I am not surprised by his nieve views.
It is over! Move to AUSTRAILIA.
Although I loved visiting Austrailia is 2002, I don't want any of us on the site to start acting like the Baldwin idiot so let's not say this sentence at least.
