Bush will win on Immigration to save the Republican Party.

Posted on 03/27/2006 9:53:41 AM PST by Pukin Dog

Just a little dose of reality for some of you going nuts over the Immigration issue, because there is NO chance that you will win on the border enforcement issue. No chance whatsoever. Only after a migrant worker program passes, making most of these illegal aliens legal, is there any chance at all to have meaningful border enforcement.

Bush is not running for office anymore, but the Republican Congress is in need of a big victory in November. This issue will kill our chances to maintain the majority, and knowing that, Bush will likely veto any bill making illegal immigration a felony, if that bill does not include the migrant worker program (call it amnesty if you want) needed to hold onto Business and Hispanic support for the Republican Party.

The Illegal Immigration Genie is out of the bottle, folks. You can’t stuff her back in without losing the House and/or Senate in November. Pragmatic minds will rule in the end, and that is a bitter pill you best swallow now.

FReepers can’t will elections for the Republican Party, but we sure can go a long way towards losing them, if we can’t put our common sense ahead of our passions on this issue. I live in San Diego County, and I see the problems with illegal immigration on a daily basis.

Whether you like it or not, much of the commerce of this country does depend on these folks to do jobs that Americans won’t do for the prevailing wage.

So, you have a choice, you can demand the border enforcement bills on their own, or you can swallow hard and consider everything you will lose if we turn off 10-15% of the electorate, in addition to the business community that depends on these workers. Yeah, they broke the law, and so do the people who hire them.

So what?

Yeah, I said it, SO WHAT? The time to be worried about that was when there were REAL Republican majorities in the Border States. It is too late now. This is a problem that cannot be solved, but only managed.

It is possible to be right and stupid at the same time. Pete Wilson tried this a few years ago, got all kinds of support for it. It passed, and Pete Wilson is gone. Then a judge overturned it anyway. That is exactly what you can expect to happen with these current bills as well. Some judge will put an injunction on enforcement, but by the time that happens, we will be knee-deep into impeachment proceeding under a Democrat Congress.

Bush won’t let that happen, neither will smarter members of the Senate and House. You won’t win, you can’t win, but you can shoot yourself and the Republican party in the head (even if you are not a member) by pursuing a program that does not include amnesty or whatever you want to call it.

We lost this one.

Get over it. There are bigger battles ahead.

OK. I tried to have a reasonable discussion about this issue. You obviously want to hurl insults. Enjoy yourself, but find another target. I'm done.

Buh-bye. Here's one for you on your way out. Bush wants to appease the invaders. So do you. Is there any wonder why you're such a Bushbot? Not here.

They do not need to be rounded up and deported. But they do not deserve free health care (ERs), get a free education, free in-state tuition, and all the other goodies they do get.

And they won't flock away? The Dems promises are meaningless? Feh. The Dems make promises to get elected. Just like the GOP does. And unforunately, their promises tend to work to get them elected.

America had a shot, we gave it a good run. It's time to chart a different course apparently. Oh, I'm not leaving, I'm just not feeding the DemoPublican Globalist anti-American machine anymore.

Reagan Man...With all due respect, I think you're not being fair with Pukin Dog regarding his potential hiring of illegal immigrants.
I believe he hires Mexicans, without ascertaining their citizenship, to work around his home. He isn't employing them full time at a business.

The vast majority of these people coming here is a testament to America's greatness. I myself can only admire someone who would leave their own country, with, generally speaking, only the clothes on their back and venture here for the purpose of improving the livelihoods of themselves and their families.
Of course illegal immigration is wrong and appropriate steps need to be put in place to deter this. But is it wrong to pay a man or woman to do a job, knowing that they might be 'illegal', if their only crime is working their tails off to provide for their loved ones? I think even Ronnie wouldn't have minded this type of discretion.
Let's deal with the issue of illegal immigration, but let's not turn away a stranger who comes to our door offering his labor for a loaf of bread in return.

Besides, Pukin Dog is wrong on so many other issues that we can forgive him for possibly hiring illegal Mexicans to cut his lawn. (Now don't misinterpret that as advocating PD's support for GWB's immigration reform position.)

You are so far off the mark with your history, I will not even attempt a rebuttal.

I agree with you. I'm tired of walking around with the Dems' hands in my pockets, telling me what the government has to do so Pukin Dog can have his underpaid and illegal labor. Why should I have to subsidize his lawlessness?

What most people ignore is the fact that they send the money home, not spend it here. Why should they? They've got their EBT cards to buy clothes and food at Walmart. The pittance Dog pays goes home to Mamacita - the illegals mom, not the baby's!

Thanks for the link. That's about it as far as I can tell. Agenda 21 and all the other globalist tripe is being put into action and that's where I've been totally naive -- I never believed in my heart of hearts our Republican leaders had truly bought into it. I was wrong.

You do realize that their presence here, in such numbers, suppresses the prevailing wage, don't you?

That so many blacks have come out against Democrats,...

"so many", you say?
Last time I looked Republicans were still only getting less than 10% of the black vote. There's no big movement in the black community towards the Right. If you believe this then you don't reside in the real world.
And thank you, I have read plenty of Mr. Sowell's books. I also speak with blacks on a regular basis about politics and they do not appear willing to give their stamp o'approval to the G.O.P. anytime in the near future.

It's become political hand grenades to talk immigration.

Agreed. I'm not against a guest worker program, but someone will have to convince me we need one first, and then it will not work without tougher employer sanctions first.

And just for the record, hiring illegals is already against the law.

A law not enforced, is not a law.

Bingo! There was a purpose for the amendment that does not - or should not - apply today. The difference is that the slaves were NOT here voluntarily like illegals.

Agreed.

"The Citizenship Clause did not originate from John Bingham but was inserted while the bill was under consideration in the Senate by Sen. Jacob Howard.

I know.

Anyone reading the article would have seen that.

To understand the correct interpretation of the 14th Amendment we need to understand what the co-author of the amendment wrote about the Amendment. In 1866, Senator Jacob Howard

Why do you doubt Bush? He says theyll all gladly go home in 3-6years when their "guest worker" term is up.

Yes its wrong. And Reagan thought so too. The IRCA of 1986 that Reagan signed into law, had provisions for employers to be fined up to $1,000,000 for hiring illegals of any kind. Still the law of the land too. ;^)

If not in a gated community, lots and lots of ammo. One can never have too much.
