Man sentenced for ride-by bottom slap Sun Feb 26, 8:28 AM ET
BOGOTA, Colombia, Feb 24 - A Colombian man has been sentenced to four years' house arrest for slapping a woman's bottom as he rode by her on his bicycle, sparking debate on whether the punishment fit the crime.
Showing re-enactments of the incident, television news shows were filled on Friday with legal experts offering opinions about the judgment handed down earlier in the week by Bogota's district court.
Some said that to confine bicycle messenger Victor Garcia to his home for four years for smacking Diana Marcela Diaz's buttocks was excessive. Others said it would deter other men.
One program showed three models having their denim clad bottoms smacked so hard by a phantom hand it could be clearly heard by television viewers.
The women said that while the punishment seemed extreme, they hoped the case would mean they would be safer while on foot.
"It happened to me once," one of the models said. "I was walking very relaxed and a guy rode by on his bicycle and, 'ta!' He smacked me. I took off my shoe to hit him with it but he was already too far away."

It WAS a serious crime. The punishment will teach him a lesson, and the govt will not have to pay for his food and board. Sounds good to me.
He should have thought about whether he wanted to be housebound for 4 yrs before touching the woman's backside.

4 Year? Gosh in High School I took care of a problem like this in 4 seconds. Some guy pinched me on the chest and I tried to slap his face. Unfortunately he ducked and instead of connecting to his face I wound up giving him kind of a Karate chop to the nose. Once his nose stopped bleeding he went home.Later that evening his father called my father demanding that we pay for the medical cost of a fractured nose. I explained to my father why the young mans nose wound up rather crocked and my father called the young man's father right back on the telephone. After the young man was allowed out of the house again after being grounded he apologized to my face.
We are talking about one particular type of crimes committed by adults, not kindergarten kids who pull pony tails or old women who dont know how to park, which obviously arent as serious.

To say that no one should ever touch someone else without permission seems extreme. I guess I'm guilty of assault, because I'm a hugger. I never ask "May I hug you?" That's just weird.
The guy was wrong. He shouldn't have done it -- no argument. He should be punished -- community service, counseling, if necessary, maybe even a couple of weeks in the slammer. If he continues to behave inappropriately, then he's asked for it.
I say this as a woman. If someone did that to me, I would want him to learn a lesson, but there's no way I'd want him to go to jail for 4 years -- not unless there was some other extenuating circumstances, like he habitually did this in spite of other attempts of correction, or a history of (real) sexual assault.
Its amazing that you tried to turn a story of sexual assalt into a war against men!!
