one could argue, it was too dangerous of a time to be risking a superb nominee such as Alito (and yet, he had to nominate somebody). When you look at it in that light, Harriet Miers served a valuable purpose. I tend to think that was by design.

The WH knew exactly when Fitzgerald's GJ was to expire.

Miers dropped out 24 hours prior.

You can roll on the floor and do what you do all you like. Personally, I think it's best for the President when people believe things just work out for him by accident.
