In a survey of 517 National Academy members, only 7% said they believed in a personal god, while 72% said they disbelieved (the rest were agnostic). 8% believed in life after death, while 77% disbelieved.
So among the nation's top scientists, between 2/3 and 3/4 are atheistic by conventional definition; 15 - 20% are agnostic, and the rest are theists.
