To The Readers Of ArubaTruth

January 21st, 2006

I have received much positive response to our defense of Aruba’s conduct in the disappearance case of Natalee Holloway. In Boston, this weekend at the Vacation Expo, many consumers offered their support of our stance and booked their vacations to Aruba.

It was a difficult communication forum, but I did carefully offer the official view of the case, and why we had done nothing to halt or hamper the investigation. In my statements regarding the culpability of the suspects, I offered the view that a case against the suspects was progressing and that it was the goal of the investigation to find them guilty of a range of charges.

I have been critiqued for being too strong on this issue. But, there seems to be no doubt that the prosecution seeks to prove this premise. In the United States, prosecutors regularly claim that the accussed is guilty of the crime, and then they proceed to prove it. Any other language by me on Dr. Phil would have appeared to be a dodge or cover up.

It was a highly charged, negative environment, but we felt that speaking out was better than failing to appear. It seems for most viewers, we presented a reasoned, calm perspective on the case.

It is difficult to speak to the Aruban audience and the American audience at the same time. Still, we were able to make our points:

1.The investigation continues
2.There is an ongoing search for forensic evidence
3.Witnesses in Alabama and Aruba will be questioned

In sum, it was a challenging, but essential opportunity to present the Aruban side of the case. Such efforts to explain our efforts to the American audience will continue, so that charges of corruption, collusion, or apathy in the case will not go unchallenged.

Steve Cohen defends Aruba on Dr. Phil

January 21st, 2006

Steve Cohen fielded questions from Dr. Phil, Beth Twitty, and her attorney, John Q. Kelly this past Thursday. The group addressed some of the many issues at hand as the investigation into the disappearance of Natalee Holloway continues.

Simply put, everything depends on one thing, solving this case.

“As we go forward here, the things I just stated are the things I think we are going to attempt to do in the next weeks without a timetable so nobody can come back and say well it didn’t happen in this amount of time.

The only goal, the only reason that I exist or any of this exists is because we have to solve the case. Everything else that is in the best interest of Aruba revolve around that result.

That’s why Beth Holloway Twitty and her family, and the extended family, are our most important business.

And if we’ve made errors in the past, we can be angry about it and as representatives, we can argue it out on our own. But we are not going to argue about the central premise, is that this case has to be solved. We think we’re doing everything we can to solve it. And if we’re wrong, come after us when we’re wrong.

But we’re not going to give up and no amount of pressure is going to say to us that we should take our eye off of this ball.” Steve Cohen on Dr. Phil - January 19, 2006

What is going on the island right now in terms of a new search. Jossy said they are searching both on the ocean with Tim Miller one of the best access we could have had in Aruba and they are searching by the lighthouse at the dunes with items sticks pointing and sticking them in the sand to see what they can uncover. Because apparently the police have some additional or new leads that have brought them to these two searches.

Are the new areas that they have never search before are the searching deeper in the sand that they had? Jossy said they are searching deeper in the sand than they had. But they are going over quite a bit of terrine that was already had gone over before.

Tim Miller said the equipment that they are taking over there to do the water is certainly different than what we took before and mainly because they are going to be in 800 to 1,000 feet of water. They are taking magnetometers and underwater cameras that will go that deep. That is not an area that divers are going to be able to dive it is way way too deep so if they locate something they will actually take it to the surface with remote vehicles.

It’s going to be kind of difficult and who knows what all they are going to find out there. As far as the searches going in the sand dunes they have offered ground penetration units at no cost to the Aruban authorities. About anything that they will need we can supply them.

Where did these new tips come from that lead to the searches of these areas deeper and also going back into the water? Jossy they came from a lot of interviews that the police has done in the past two weeks especially in the circle of friends of Joran.

And one witness that they can’t determine who he is or what importance he has to the police but there is one witness that apparently has changed his story that has lead the police to believe that her body is either in the sand dunes or in the ocean in a fish trap that was missing the same early morning that Natalee went missing.

Former police detective Mike Sheehan:

This case has been going on a really long now they are going back does is surprise you that they wouldn’t have searched in this way initially. Mike said it does because they had information right from beginning that these three boys were with her at the light house. The light house is maybe a 100 yards away from these dunes. Obviously you have to check there that’s the first thing you do.

You may do a random check and host said they did a check a now they are going deeper into the sand they are going back into the waters. Does it seem appropriate at this point? Mike said absolutely and also he would besides that just these probes that they have in the sand they should also definitely bring in cadaver dogs.

What about the interviews they did with these three suspects. There was a period of time in the beginning that they talked to them now they let them go and Joran is back in school Should they bring them back again and see if their stories match from what they gave initially.

Mike said absolutely, I mean let’s face facts these guy are definitely involved some how with this girls disappearance. I mean and the father, this is a despicable human being. This guy tell his own son and the other two kids don’t use your cell phone and come up with a story that you could all agree on and this kind of stuff stay off your emails be very careful.

Does your gut tell you this crime can be solved? Mike said absolutely the answer is right there those three kids. You have to bring them back in. In this country we have the system is a grand jury. Host said I know Mike but the Aruban law we learned is very different.

"Steve Cohen: It is difficult to speak to the Arubans and the Americans at the same time."

Has anyone figured out what that means? My understanding is that while some things are safe to say in Aruba, among themselves, they must keep Americans in the dark. In other words, spin the facts to Americans.
