WASHINGTON (CNS) -- The president of the U.S. bishops blasted a recent episode of the cable television comedy "South Park" that he said showed Mary in "a tasteless and ugly fashion."
In a Dec. 14 letter to Tom Freston, co-president and chief operating officer of Viacom International, parent company of Comedy Central, the cable channel that shows "South Park," Bishop William S. Skylstad of Spokane, Wash., said the channel showed "extreme insensitivity" in choosing to show the episode.
The episode, which first was shown Dec. 7 and had repeat showings in the week following, was titled "Bloody Mary." During the episode, a "South Park" character claims to have been sprayed with blood from a bodily orifice of a Virgin Mary statue.
When Pope Benedict XVI investigates in the show, he declares that she was merely menstruating. The episode's premiere date came the day before the feast of the Immaculate Conception, a holy day of obligation for Catholics.
Jesus vs Santa over Christmas
Fight between Jesus and Satan. Everybody bet on Satan - who then lost becuase he took a dive after betting on Jesus
The episode where Jesus's miracles couldn't match David Blaine's
All seemingly acceptable, but let South Park mock people who believe in magical statues and WHAM!
;)
Lol - I know that. :P
It is biting satire. You should try to wade through L. Ron Hubbard's "Mission Earth". Then watch South Park.
The kids complete irreverence of anything is refreshing. It let's you evaluate your positions from a different perspective.
I understand peoples complaints with the show. It is rough! (But brilliant.)
OK - turn around...
turn around...
;~D
It's formula humor. Goes like this:
A)Set up a convenient sacred cow.
B)Conflict in town regarding the cow and one or more of the construction paper characters.
C)Hit the usual cliches and then carry it into an extreme.
D)End conflict with commonsense saving the day through accomodation.
"I have watched numerous episodes of South Park and found nothing that funny in it."
So you are asserting that it is, in an objective sense, "not funny?" Surely you must be convinced by now that there are people, of above average intellect, who disagree. So why keep fighting the fight? I'm not trying to convince you that it is funny. That's subjective. But again, why waste so much energy on trying to convince me and others that I'm wrong?
actually you are wrong.
The conflict was the father's drinking problems, not the statue.
You really need to rewatch the episode.

Because I like comedy. I enjoy discussing it.
you supposedly LIKE comedy, but nothing in South Park makes you laugh?
Let me guess, you find watching paint dry funny huh?
You are RIGHT ON THE MONEY.
You're a total nutcase, huh Archie?
Sure. Just PM me your address.
My favorite form of comedy is stand up.
But I have seen very funny stuff on TV (not much, but some). Family Guy is funny and has an interesting format.
you like Family Guy but not South Park?
interesting....
If you can't laugh at a 40 ft. antenna coming out your butt, what is funny?
LOL
