I don't think so. I knew some fellas that grew in their bedroom. All it took was some soil and lamps. Growing for personal use is very simple. Hemp is a very durable plant that requires little maintenance or chemicals.

Making good shine takes considerably more skill. Especially since you can get poisoned from drinking poorly made shine.

Plus I have yet to try homemade stuff as good as the store-bought. And in Russia almost everyone has a still to make their own.

I guess I must have hit it about right though, one respondent thinks pot is much harder to grown than 'shine is to make, another thinks shine is much harder to make than to grow pot for personal use. I'd wager that making good beer or wine is harder than either, but not enough to discourage the home brewer/raiser of any of them.

I meant to add that while making shine can be hazardous to the health of the moonshiner, it's nowhere near as much so as cooking meth. And given some of the nasty stuff that's used to make that stuff, it's amazing more folks aren't killed from bad batches.

Hemp also has low THC content; growing cannabis plants with high THC content takes more effort. (That's why "ditch weed" is a derogatory term.)
