Evolution also allows for the possibility that speciation may be cyclic, going round and round the same track forever.
I don't know why you posted that to me, but I doubt you could get cyclic speciation - the state space is too vast. I do though recall reading about three species of snakes with a cyclic relationship; first one would dominate, then the second, then the third, then the first again etc. I don't recall the details.
