Evolution in the bible, says Vatican

THE Vatican has issued a stout defence of Charles Darwin, voicing strong criticism of Christian fundamentalists who reject his theory of evolution and interpret the biblical account of creation literally.

Cardinal Paul Poupard, head of the Pontifical Council for Culture, said the Genesis description of how God created the universe and Darwin's theory of evolution were "perfectly compatible" if the Bible were read correctly. His statement was a clear attack on creationist campaigners in the US, who see evolution and the Genesis account as mutually exclusive.

"The fundamentalists want to give a scientific meaning to words that had no scientific aim," he said at a Vatican press conference. He said the real message in Genesis was that "the universe didn't make itself and had a creator".

This idea was part of theology, Cardinal Poupard emphasised, while the precise details of how creation and the development of the species came about belonged to a different realm - science. Cardinal Poupard said that it was important for Catholic believers to know how science saw things so as to "understand things better".

His statements were interpreted in Italy as a rejection of the "intelligent design" view, which says the universe is so complex that some higher being must have designed every detail.

It is silly to think that "nomadic shepherds" couldn't deal with counting flocks of hundreds of sheep.

You missed the point. The point is not whether Isreal used to be pretty.... maybe it was. The point is there is no mention in the bible of anything or anyplace not already known to exist. No mention that most of the world's population lived somewhere else, that most of the world's land mass was across oceans, on a round earth that rotated around the sun... Something that would indicate a divine knowledge above and beyond the knowledge base of the time. It appears to have been written in a bubble.

Dating is secondary to the fact that the mere presence of these minerals indicates that the area was submerged by water at one time.

But that has all changed. It seems the science points to life beginning almost immediately, in relative terms, once water appeared. So Genesis predicted a creation event and then went on to describe the appearance of water immediately followed by life. Not bad for flat earthers.

OK - anything a little more sophisticated than 'we need water to live'.... something that was really not a big surprise to anyone living in the desert?

Dating is critical. There's water on Mars, but it has nothing to do with a global flood on Earth.

If the date of these minerals and the lava is in the tens of thousands to millions of year range, there is no possible tie in to the Ark.

Your sarcasm simply betrays ignorance.

This particular cardinal is the head of the Pontifical Council for Culture and his announcement is billed as a Vatican statement. The article also mentions that "His statements were interpreted in Italy as a rejection of the 'intelligent design' view, which says the universe is so complex that some higher being must have designed every detail."

If you're looking for reasons not to face how things are going for the ID movement, I suppose you can interpret that as the reporter finding a wino in a rain gutter in Rome who interprets the statement as quoted. Denial isn't just a river in Egypt. People are finding out what ID is about and it's looking shabby.

I wasn't being sarcastic at all. If Genesis explains everything you want to know about the world's history, that's fine. Not everyone has to be interested in science.

miracle is something that violates natural law

Violates, hmm. Most miracles are beneficial--can't think of any that aren't.

Says who. Seems they did alright enough that every empire on earth around Israel wanted their possession. They also did alright enough that they gave rise to the richest and wisest man on the planet for a while - Solomon. Nothing more than a nomadic shepherd.. lol. For all you think you know, you guys are ignorant. Why is that.

The law of nature is that all of nature must obey the voice and whims of God. How, then, would a miracle (nature obeying the voice of God) be in violation of natural law.. Christ healed the Blind man by doing what? Putting dirt in his eyes and crafting from the dirt the portions missing from their makeup. It reinforces the statement that we were made from the dust of the ground. It shows that he knows how it was done while he does it yet again to provide sight to the blind man. And it shows that nature operated as God intended it to.

So, where's the beef?

His statement didn't go nearly far enough and he stressed the wrong point! The real message in Genesis is that we didn't evolve from apes. The message is that God created man special.

I'm not sure how/if evolution happened. But I do know that man did not come from evolution. Man is a special created being.

One of the main problems in the world today is that kids are being taught that they are nothing more than educated animals. So they act like it. Big surprise.
