Godett not behind bars before the elections

CURACAO – It is most unlikely that FOL-leader Anthony Godett would start serving his sentence due to corruption, before the Parliamentary elections on January 27th.

Spokesperson Giselle Veen-Jonkhout of the Public Prosecution (OM) indicated that there are about 70 other persons waiting, before Godett and the three other convicted persons in the fraud- and corruption case can be put behind bars.

The OM didn’t want to comment on the statements of Justice Minister David Dick (PAR) about no shortage of cells currently. Dick mentioned this during the presentation of the Safety Plan and today in the Netherlands. “We said this earlier and we say it again: everybody will come around”, said the spokesperson.

The OM told the Amigoe that there are 75 persons waiting to serve an imprisonment sentence, and this is including the four mentioned above, whose petition for clemency was denied last year in December. “These are cases with sentences in 2000 up till 2005 that do not involve narcotics, there is a separate regulation for these, but are penal offences with sentences varying between 5 weeks to 3 years imprisonment.

Attorney General Dick Piar informed Godett’s lawyer that for the time being neither Godett or Rob Salas or Chris Winkel will go to jail. Putting Godett behind bars now would mean that he can start a court case against this and will also win it.

The OM says that it is difficult to say when Godett and the others will serve their sentence. They did say though that in March the women ward, with a capacity of 68 prisoners, will become available, because the female prisoners will then move to the location where the illegal persons are currently being detained.

Management Aviation department fears headhunters

ARUBA -- Willem Vrolijk, chairman of MPA, saw that the Aviation Administration has bad management, but he also observes lack of vision, lack of capability to make plans and there is no political and professional desire to improve the sad situation.

Last week he accused minister Edison Briesen (MEP) of Tourism and Transportation of setting wrong priorities regarding his policy in the field of transportation. He says that the air traffic delays that continue to increase are not only to be blamed on the minister’s bad policy.

It is the Aviation Administration’s responsibility to advise the minister on policy and planning. “Aviation Administration knows how bad the aviation situation is in Aruba”, says Vrolijk. He noticed that up till now, nothing has been done to solve the problems.

According to him, fear is at the bottom of the passivity of the Administration. “They do realize that they should be alert, because this government has already rolled 30 heads.”

It would be very interesting to know what advise the management of the responsible department had given the minister on the sad situation in which Aruba’s aviation is. The interest of Vrolijk goes beyond party politics; he is an air traffic controller.

Lampe: ‘Equal rights for all Dutch citizens’

ARUBA – During the four-day tripartite deliberations that has started today in Curacao, Rudy Lampe (RED) will plead for equal rights for all citizens in the Realm. All citizens with the Dutch citizenship in the Royal Dutch Kingdom should have access to all privileges and rights that apply in the mother country.

“This stems from the fact that all citizens in the different parts of the Realm have the same citizenship”, says Lampe.

“Even though we all say that we live in the same Realm, some parts of this Realm are coping with poverty, with schools that are falling into ruins and the elderly care is behind the times.”

The RED-party is of the opinion that the citizens of Aruba have fewer rights than the inhabitants of the Netherlands.

According to RED, the traditional parties only defend the principles of an equal status of the different countries of the realm, because that gives the local politicians power to do whatever pleases them.

“But what’s the purpose of equal autonomy, when citizens in the different parts of the realm are not being equally treated?”
