Cannabis-based drugs might relieve bowel disease
Yahoo ^

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Derivatives of the active compound in cannabis -- cannabinoids -- may have the potential for treating inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, UK researchers report.

"The system that responds to cannabis in the brain is present and functioning in the lining of the gut," lead researcher Dr. Karen Wright, of the University of Bath, explained to Reuters Health. "There is an increased presence of one component of this system during inflammatory bowel diseases," she explained.

Wright and her colleagues established the location of cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2 in human colon tissue, and used human colon cell lines to investigate the binding of cannabinoid compounds and in wound-healing experiments. They report their findings in the journal Gastroenterology

The team found that CB2 was increased in colonic tissue characteristic of inflammatory bowel disease. Cannabinoids enhanced surface wound closure via CB1-related mechanisms.

"Cannabinoids, which we make ourselves, as well as synthetic cannabinoids, can promote wound healing in the gut, which is extremely interesting given that inflammatory bowel disease involves damaged gut linings," Wright said.

Although results are available yet, she added, relevant studies of the use of cannabinoids are taking place in the UK and a clinical trial is being conducted in Germany.

"But you've got to follow the $$$ and know that the major pharmaceutical companies are contributors to the MS society."

Hmmmm. Maybe GW Pharmaceuticals needs to contribute more, huh?

Or maybe marijuana simply doesn't work.

I don't care.. I know what I've seen. Lost lives. Ruined families.

It's a horrible problem, and your kind that likes to promote it as a proper pasttime.. Words can't explain what I feel about your type.

I think cannabis is on par with alcohol in ruining lives but my opinion is that if it can be used in medicine then great.

In terms of legislation I think it would send the wrong message but I also think it is not my business to tell other people their business so I kind of sit on the fence. But I do favour relaxed punishments on people that smoke pot in the privacy of their own home. Jsut give them a citation not a criminal records, provided they do not sell it or drive stoned.

I'm seriously not convinced it can be used as a medicine. I suppose heroin could cover up symptoms as well, or crack.

I'd say, lets work on real medication that can work to control and actually remedy issues, not more stuff to cover them up.

I mean, some people would probably feel better if we inject them with alcohol as a medicine for awhile.

To actually consider such a thing is nuts of course. These aren't medicines by any means.

We have alcohol and tobacco, that's bad enough. There's no reason to go beyond that whatsoever. And this medical stuff is just a scam anyway by the NORML crowd.

Its tough that you've no credibility. I don't believe you. I think you're a liar, unable to site one example. Hyperbole from your type, another form of deceit.

Hmmmm. I read "may have the potential for", not "a cure has been found".

If you read the link that dawn53 provided in post #126, you'll see the details from the National MS Society.

The fact that you attack me over attacking a drug, tells a lot Mr Addict.

We use both alcohol and heroin in modern medicine. Alcohol is used to sterilise needles and heroin to relieve pain. If there are chemical compounds in marijuana that could be used to treat people then it should investigated.

Pure isn't used.

Weaker relatives are however..

Obviously I didn't mean ethyl alcohol, but the kind people drink.

Which means companies should (and do) research into it more. If they can research the benefits of heroin, amphetamines and every other "street" drug then they should do the same for cannabis.

The new story on this thread stresses that compounds ion marijuana can be used to help patients, just like compounds in heroin, speed and alcohol can be used in modern medicine.

"If there is a God, you will have the pleasure of losing half your body weight while on chemotherapy ..."

Preferable to dying by smoking marijuana with a suppressed immune system:

"Transplantation, Vol. 61, June 27, 1996. (Marijuana smoke transmits aspergillosis, a fungus having up to a 90% fatality rate if contracted by transplant patients. Researchers have strongly warned against the use of marijuana in immuno-compromised patients such as those with AIDS, chronic granulomatous disease, bone marrow transplants and those receiving chemotherapy for small cell lung cancer.)"

"Hamadeh and associates. Chest, Vol. 94/2, pp.432-433, 1988. "Invasive aspergillosis has become a significant cause of death in immunosuppressed patients". Physicians should be aware of this potentially lethal complication of marijuana use in compromised hosts such as patients with AIDS or malignancies.)"

"Voth EA, Schwartz RH. Medicinal applications of delta 9 THC and marijuana: a perspective. Annals of Internal Medicine 1997: 126:791-8. (Marijuana is not a panacea. It is an impure weed that introduces immuno compromised patients to bacteria, fungi, and other toxic complications. We recommend sticking with predictable medical therapies and not deviating from FDA approved medicine in exchange for herbal remedies."

Perhaps, I still see no real evidence. It's that it might possibly be. But often that never works out.

The push for this 'research' is all legalization political activity anyway. A total red herring.

Not really. There are plenty of stock exchange listed pharmaceutical companies in the UK and Europe that research and create cannabis medication used by Hospitals. They have no link whatsoever to pro-legislation gruops, in fact their aim is to create a medicine that can be patented and used to make profits.

I'm sure there's a lot of profit to be made in the 'getting high use of medical pot' and about zero to be made in the 'no high, but actual treatment is there' situation.
