It's time for the FairTax. (Make April 15th Just Another Day)

Posted on 07/30/2005 10:49:39 AM PDT by Man50D

The current Federal income tax system is broken. Patching up the existing code is pointless. It's time for a fresh approach, a fair approach.Simply put, the FairTax replaces the way we're currently taxed - based on our annual income - with a tax on goods and services. The FairTax is a voluntary “consumption" tax: the more you buy, the more you pay in taxes, the less you buy, the less you pay in taxes. It's simple. Everyone pays their fair share of taxes, and with the FairTax rebate, spending up to the poverty level is tax free. The Federal government is fully funded, including Social Security and Medicare, and you don't need an expert to determine your Federal taxes. It's simple.

Good luck getting any traction with the majority of the Republican party on this issue: almost 5 years of Republicans controlling all three branches of the federal govt, and a majority of the state legislations and governorships.

And where are they on changing the IRS?
NO, they are happy with the Status Quo....

...which is why I have said GOODBYE to the Republican party.

If only we saw this, rather than SS reform, as the centerpiece of Bush's second term. Don't get me wrong, I support the President's plan, but I'm much more concerned about the screwed up tax system now than I am about a potential loss of benefits in 30 yaers.

"If only we saw this, rather than SS reform, as the centerpiece of Bush's second term."

-Yes I'd love to see that as well...social security privatization, along with a flat tax, or better yet a consumption tax.

But after 5 years of the Bush administration doing basically nothing (except talk ), I have come to disbelief.
The Republicans (at least led by Pres. Bush) are NOT serious about IRS or federal income tax reform.

Yes, GW has chipped a little around the edges, by elimination of the marriage penalty, reduction in progressive rates, etc...but the IRS is still there,as are the progressive rates.

>"Don't get me wrong, I support the President's plan, but I'm much more concerned about the screwed up tax system now than I am about a potential loss of benefits in 30 years."<

Agreed. Social Security will eventually go broke, it's just a matter of time at how long they can keep this Ponzi scheme afloat. And I fault Bush in that, as well.

Privatizing 2-3% of SSI will not do squat to save it.

Regards

I like the idea of a flat tax. X% on income. And the flatter (lower) it is the better.

That is probably easier (cheaper) to administer than a national sales tax.

However, the 'Fair Tax' would be an improvement on our current BS system.

A Taxreform bump for you all.

If you would like to be added to this ping list let me know.

John Linder in the House(HR25) & Saxby Chambliss Senate(S25) offer a comprehensive bill to kill all income and SS/Medicare payroll taxes outright and replace them with with a national retail sales tax administered by the states.

H.R.25,S.25
A bill to promote freedom, fairness, and economic opportunity by repealing the income tax and other taxes, abolishing the Internal Revenue Service, and enacting a national retail sales tax to be administered primarily by the States.

Refer for additional information:

Flat taxes would lead right back to the mess we have now, IMO. NO income tax is the only way to go. Sales tax on everything, the country used to run on it until they passed the 16th amendment and started the "flat" income tax. Yes, the original was a flat tax. If we went to a flat tax in a few years they would have the same with holding scheme we have now.

We have to take the ability to touch our income away from them. Repeal the 16th, or pass another amendment making it unconstitutional to impose an income tax and the implement some type of national sales tax. This is our only hope to keep from becoming totally socialized.

With the flat tax you still have to prove your income, meaning all the record keeping, IRS intrusions, etc.

OK. As I said before, the "Fair Tax" would be an improvement on our present, sorry system.

Think for a moment on how much beaurocracy would be needed to enforce a national sales tax. That would be a lot of waste.

Even so, "Fair Tax" would be better than what we have now.

The forbes income tax:

-keeps withholding in place
-keeps the employee payroll tax in place
-keeps the employer "contribution" payroll tax in place
-keeps business income taxes, which are invisible in higher prices - ie the flat tax keeps a significant portion of taxes hidden
-keeps the 16th amendment in place
-keeps US goods less competitive by forcing taxes and tax costs into prices of US made goods
-keeps the government's ability to audit individuals and take away their freedom for innocent mistakes
-keeps the convoluted, ever-changing definition of "taxable income" - after all, it's not determining the amount of tax that's hard, it's the determination of taxable income - which the flat income tax does nothing about (indeed some say it will get worse).

No flat income tax for me, thanks.

I choose the nrst - which has none of the bad stuff above.

Quick info on nrst HR 25.

45 States already have a sales tax mechanism in place. What are you saying will cause more bureaucracy?

Yes, that is exactly what I am saying. We will create a new FEDERAL bureaucracy. The IRS won't go away. We will just add another layer of BS.

Even so, the "Fair Tax", while not as good as the flat tax, would be an improvement and I would support it.

Good enough?

It would take less beauracracy to take care of a sales tax than it does to handle an income tax, flat or otherwise. With a flat tax we would still have the IRS in it's present form. Get rid of the IRS, get rid of the illegal and socialistic income tax, please!:) I understand what you are saying but IMO, any income tax is bad and will simply revert back to what we have now:) Thanks for listening, and I have to say we both agree the present system sucks!

Of course, "good enough". I am not placing any qualitative value on your opinion, only trying to see why you believe the nrst would increase bureaucracy.

If there arleady exists a mechanism to do everything, what will be added?

The fair tax taxes wealth, not one's ability to accumulate wealth.

The fair tax is the most progressive tax on the table for it allows for no taxation on basic needs and much taxation on wealthy lifestyles.

The fair tax collects revenues from: (1 illegal aliens (2 foreign tourists (3 underground economies such as the drug trade.

The fair tax rids us of government intrusion into our personal finances.

The fair tax system is already in place in most of the country via state sales tax systems.

The fair tax would allow for the repatriation of billions, perhaps trillions of offshore dollars.

The fair tax would create the world's largest tax haven from New York to California, bringing manufacturing plants, international headquarters and jobs.

Etcetera, etcetera.
