Her travels may be over, but Wilbanks' troubles may have just begun. Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter said he was examining evidence for a possible charge of making false statements to a government agency.
Sartain believes that's not necessary.
"She is deeply regretful of the pain she caused her family, her fiancé, her friends and the community who rallied to her aid," the lawyer said Wednesday. "I believe Jennifer committed no crime."
Arrests for shoplifting
Sartain, a former Hall County district attorney, knows her client. Court records show that Wilbanks was arrested three times in that county on shoplifting charges from 1996 to 1998.
In 1996, as district attorney, Sartain prosecuted Wilbanks for allegedly shoplifting $1,740 in merchandise from a Gainesville mall, court records show. Sartain dropped the felony charge after Wilbanks, then 24, completed a pretrial diversion program, the records show. Wilbanks performed 75 hours of community service and paid restitution, according to court records.
Months before that felony arrest, police had charged Wilbanks with misdemeanor shoplifting for allegedly taking $37.05 in merchandise from a Gainesville Wal-Mart. Court records show that officials dismissed the case after Wilbanks completed "Project Turnabout," a six-week counseling program for shoplifters.
She was arrested again, city court records show, in April 1998, when Wilbanks, then 25, was charged with shoplifting $98 worth of merchandise from a store. She pleaded guilty and served two weekends in jail. A judge also sentenced her to probation, a $400 fine and 50 hours of community service.
Half of our posts are devoted to correcting other poster's factual information, (for instance whether the couple were living together or not.)
Agreed on all counts.
Amen. Very well said. Very good insight
It was the Canadian humourist, Stephen Leacock, that mentioned elderly women. They seemed to - in his day - the turn of the 20th century, cluck and fuss about the younger women of the day. Quoth Leacock. Those grandmothers would have run at a faster clip in their day.
I am going to dig into history on this one. Our female friends, for hundreds of years, have scandalized and amazed. Sure she caused an awful agony. Someday she will be forgiven. Yeah, those mothers and Jackson- oh no, now I will become very nasty, about them.
How is it private to call 911 and tell the cops a hispanic guy kidnapped and raped you, and then stand by the story for four hours?
Thanks for the reminder. That is exactly why it's not just a 'personal family' matter and she had to have known there would be publicity.
That being said, I would still rather move on from coverage of this as a news issue and leave the pathetic duo to handle it privately. She made a huge and crazy mistake but no one died as a result.
Is there anyone in jail for doing that?
Clearly she has issues though and if she's religious, they need somne heavy duty premarital therapy. Marriage isn't a cake walk and if her family were becoming in-law bridezilla party planners, well she better take care of that. Also, sometimes when you're high society circles you have to do what is expected of you. Perhaps if she was true to herself and did what she wanted in life and not what her social circle wanted, then this would have never happened. I feel sorry for her. She'll be forever known as the runaway bride.
Death my 100 sound bytes.
I'm always glad for a little good will, even the benefit of the doubt. However, your posting style leads me to believe you really don't give a rat's...
Either Mason is a dumbass or he sees something in her that no one else does. I'm going to be disagreeable and say he's a dumbass *lol* He should opt for a loooooooon re-engagement.
1998 - last (known) arrest for shoplifting
$1,700 is not a simple 5-fingered impulse act - It would be interesting to know what she grabbed
Patterns Patterns
She kept doing it - even after her big $1,700 offense was written off after community service, paying back the victims - looks like her record was whitewashed - so she felt she could do it again
The average criminal only gets nailed for a few of many crimes
As much as we would like to pretend that others our ourselves change over time - it is usually a game we play
I have been fortunate in my life in being able to quickly spot those who are criminals, liars, nutcases, sociopaths - and avoid them like the plague
I*ve seen many "Jennifers" - they are not that rare
Yet I constantly see so many naive others willing to fall for the same baloney time after time
The Green River Killer also dropped out of sight for some years - but came back
Feeling sorry for fruitcases will get you and others whacked hard
Sociopaths get much worse over time - their hobbies grow and grow
Jennifer is 32 now - two times a juvenile 16! - time to grow up - not play Viva Las Vegas because of "stress" and "issues"......
600 guests, over a dozen bridesmaids, 8 bridal showers, huge 5-finger discounts, plastic "surgical enhancements" - Jennifer seems to always need "more" and "more"
This is one spoiled crazy lady
John Mason should read up on Phil Hartman.....
For the sake of argument I'll accept the assumption that they are saline but even those come in silicone bags. We are talking criminal defense in state court, not civil actions in federal courts, so we don't have to worry about Daubert standards for our experts.
g'night y'all...
Really, who cares? I know people who seems perfect and had a crappy marriage. WHO KNOWS? All I know is that it's time to leave this story. It's not news, it's voyeurism.
Martha Stewart was in jail for lying to the authorities.
Under oath. That's the difference.
