Her travels may be over, but Wilbanks' troubles may have just begun. Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter said he was examining evidence for a possible charge of making false statements to a government agency.
Sartain believes that's not necessary.
"She is deeply regretful of the pain she caused her family, her fiancé, her friends and the community who rallied to her aid," the lawyer said Wednesday. "I believe Jennifer committed no crime."
Arrests for shoplifting
Sartain, a former Hall County district attorney, knows her client. Court records show that Wilbanks was arrested three times in that county on shoplifting charges from 1996 to 1998.
In 1996, as district attorney, Sartain prosecuted Wilbanks for allegedly shoplifting $1,740 in merchandise from a Gainesville mall, court records show. Sartain dropped the felony charge after Wilbanks, then 24, completed a pretrial diversion program, the records show. Wilbanks performed 75 hours of community service and paid restitution, according to court records.
Months before that felony arrest, police had charged Wilbanks with misdemeanor shoplifting for allegedly taking $37.05 in merchandise from a Gainesville Wal-Mart. Court records show that officials dismissed the case after Wilbanks completed "Project Turnabout," a six-week counseling program for shoplifters.
She was arrested again, city court records show, in April 1998, when Wilbanks, then 25, was charged with shoplifting $98 worth of merchandise from a store. She pleaded guilty and served two weekends in jail. A judge also sentenced her to probation, a $400 fine and 50 hours of community service.
OHHH THE POOR WITTLE GIRLIE!
And as for the Husband she deserves, well he would come with D-cells.
That's possible, but it is a pretty inept criminal who gets caught every time out.
Bride in altered state,
Indian blanket for veil,
Honeymooned alone.
I know what you mean??? My husband is 66 and he says the same thing...and I thank God everyday for it!!!!
I certainly hope you don't act on your responsibilities (not to mention common decency) in that boyish state.
I really like Nita's post up above.
Hope all concerned can get it sorted out and end up better people as a result.
Someone else earlier asked 'would you want your son to marry this girl'.
I'd say 'no, not right now, but if real love comes through on the other side of all this, perhaps, yes'.
The God that I comprehend put us hear to grow and improve.
I wish that for all involved.

Come to think of it, none of the above in my close nor extended family either. I think what we are seeing is more of the 'defining deviancy down'.

**But I do know that if some of the comments I've seen here were made to my face about my daughter, the person who uttered them would wake their sorry ass up in an ER.**
Exactly my sentiments, and I'm a big and strong guy, to boot.
Terri was someone's daughter, friend, wife, too.
I can predict what you will be saying if she were where Terri was and her husband wanted to "move on."
I'm a big strong guy too.. big whoop.
Mr. Vibrator?
LOL!
Guess I must have lost all my compassion...or maybe I just lost too many tax dollars on stunts like the one this woman pulled. Three years probation and resitution is ok if that's the call for filing a false police report.
Sutpidity is not an excuse for manipulative, mean actions.
Wow! Very , very good.
Thanks for your post. It's interesting to learn the provenance of the multicolored "blankie".
No he won't. The 'tang is good and he'll put up with her as long as he can get some. That's how some men are. Such fellows de$serve what they get.
Here's the difference. I believe that Terri was dead and it was just her body that was being kept alive. I don't want to get into a debate on this thread. You brought it up. We will never see eye to eye on it. Let's let it be. ok?
We all think that way, but we didn't pull the cr*p this girlie has at 18, much less at 32!

"Would you be happier if she killed herself?"
I think some in here would relish to see her do that and are disappointed that she still hasn't done it. Shame!
This case reminds me a lot of the Elizabeth Smart threads.
Wrong again. She owes every Hispanic man an apology. She owes every female who gets kidnapped and raped, and who will now have her story doubted an apology. She owes every volunteer who got out in the kudzu and snakes to look for her an apology. She owes every family member who has a loved one disappear and who then suffers a delay in getting a search underway an apology.
What neither you nor she understands is that actions have consequences.
And for the record, since I don't fall into any of those categories, there is no need for her to address her apology to me.
I don't think she should go to prison. I do think she should pay back the money spent up till she called back and said she lied. She did call and recant her story I do believe. I think the media is blowing this way out of proportion. There are many women who get murdered, who get abused, etc. and never get this much coverage.
