Excerpt...

Her travels may be over, but Wilbanks' troubles may have just begun. Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter said he was examining evidence for a possible charge of making false statements to a government agency.

Sartain believes that's not necessary.

"She is deeply regretful of the pain she caused her family, her fiancé, her friends and the community who rallied to her aid," the lawyer said Wednesday. "I believe Jennifer committed no crime."

Arrests for shoplifting

Sartain, a former Hall County district attorney, knows her client. Court records show that Wilbanks was arrested three times in that county on shoplifting charges from 1996 to 1998.

In 1996, as district attorney, Sartain prosecuted Wilbanks for allegedly shoplifting $1,740 in merchandise from a Gainesville mall, court records show. Sartain dropped the felony charge after Wilbanks, then 24, completed a pretrial diversion program, the records show. Wilbanks performed 75 hours of community service and paid restitution, according to court records.

Months before that felony arrest, police had charged Wilbanks with misdemeanor shoplifting for allegedly taking $37.05 in merchandise from a Gainesville Wal-Mart. Court records show that officials dismissed the case after Wilbanks completed "Project Turnabout," a six-week counseling program for shoplifters.

She was arrested again, city court records show, in April 1998, when Wilbanks, then 25, was charged with shoplifting $98 worth of merchandise from a store. She pleaded guilty and served two weekends in jail. A judge also sentenced her to probation, a $400 fine and 50 hours of community service.

It doesn't matter what I think.

If you have children, it should.

Thank you. Let's leave the bleeding hearts forum to the liberals. Conservatives are compassionate..not stupid.
What happened to personal responsibility? Oh, I forgot. If I have issues or am under stress you can't hold me responsbile.

I can just hear Clinton saying to this woman, " Girl, I feel your pain."

It's a match made in Heaven (or someplace else, actually). She's a flaming personality disorder, he's the perfect enabler.

Just pointing out things are not always what we are told - people say things at certain times that they think will benefit them - Kerry is suddenly now against homosexual marriages.....

I'd say recreational shoplifting that hit a $1,700 haul in one store (with two more known arrests - one at least - after the $1,700 felony [reduced to a misdeameanor!] Grand Theft) is a possible indicator or sociopathic behavior and there is likely much about Jennifer that people will not want to know about -

Would anyone leave this woman home alone with three kids?

John Mason is the one who needs to go to Vegas - alone -

Men leave ALL THE TIME.

Do they also make up stories to the cops about hispanic rapists?

I'm sorry Hildy, but if you females wish to continue to be treated as equals, then ya'll better GROW UP and take responsibility for your actions.

That's sarcasm with a dash of truth, folks.

We aren't insulting her....ok, ok,we are...maybe its easier to deal with my anger by joking or just feeling helpless when someone like this pulls this dangerous stunt.

I think if this was between Mason, and the parents
I would agree. But she brought in several hundred people and their expense for a wedding, the police, FBI, general
public, etc. because she can't face reality.

Am glad she didn't have my life. As a kid wondered
where I was going to eat or sleep next. wacko parents,
supported myself over 38 yrs. while going through over
8 major orthopedic surgeries and cancer, etc.

Thank you. I'm shocked by how downright nasty the people are here. She's someone's daughter. She's someone's best friend. She's John Mason's fiance. It's gone from news to voyeurism. Enough is enough.

the guts to come on tv and make a decent apology

I do have a huge problem with that, we of the era of wanting a good show. Any apology she owes anyone is strictly a private affair. To me, apologizing to the public is just a form of manipulation to sway public opinion or appease the public.

That's been part of the problem with our criminal justice system for a long time...we want the criminals to "be sorry" or "show remorse" and the public is often pitifully eager to forgive them if they will only "put on a show" to appease the public.

She has problems, obviously. I don't care if she ever makes another public statement, ever.

Her actions created a very public firestorm, however, and a public statement of remorse will probably be necessary, at some point, just for her to achieve respectability in her own community again. Unfair? Maybe. But actions have consequences. Public actions can have public consequences.
