Her travels may be over, but Wilbanks' troubles may have just begun. Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter said he was examining evidence for a possible charge of making false statements to a government agency.
Sartain believes that's not necessary.
"She is deeply regretful of the pain she caused her family, her fiancé, her friends and the community who rallied to her aid," the lawyer said Wednesday. "I believe Jennifer committed no crime."
Arrests for shoplifting
Sartain, a former Hall County district attorney, knows her client. Court records show that Wilbanks was arrested three times in that county on shoplifting charges from 1996 to 1998.
In 1996, as district attorney, Sartain prosecuted Wilbanks for allegedly shoplifting $1,740 in merchandise from a Gainesville mall, court records show. Sartain dropped the felony charge after Wilbanks, then 24, completed a pretrial diversion program, the records show. Wilbanks performed 75 hours of community service and paid restitution, according to court records.
Months before that felony arrest, police had charged Wilbanks with misdemeanor shoplifting for allegedly taking $37.05 in merchandise from a Gainesville Wal-Mart. Court records show that officials dismissed the case after Wilbanks completed "Project Turnabout," a six-week counseling program for shoplifters.
She was arrested again, city court records show, in April 1998, when Wilbanks, then 25, was charged with shoplifting $98 worth of merchandise from a store. She pleaded guilty and served two weekends in jail. A judge also sentenced her to probation, a $400 fine and 50 hours of community service.
Or got too much of the rod..or other things.
It doesn't affect our lives, directly anyway. But here everybody is talking about it, so it's obviously affecting your life and now mine since I have let it intrude upon my consciousness. There's multiple lessons in it no matter who you are and where you live.
The problem I'm having is that, at best, counselling and medication do not cure anyone. They can stabilize you to some extent, but you have to be monitored for a long time, sometimes the rest of your life.
Please answer the question. Would you want your son to marry a girl like this? As a parent, you have to look at things realistically or be prepared for consequences.
I'm 46 and I consider myself a girl. My point is ...what do you want from this WOMAN? Keep it up and they'll find her dead. She's a fragile, troubled woman...ya think all the public scrutiny is going to help her? Would you be happier if she killed herself? You don't have any female relations who you love who have found themselves in trouble? Would you like them to be mocked and scrutinized at every turn? Is this what our great communication advancements has brought us? The ability to degrade someone in order to make ourselves feel better? It's disgusting.
YIKES!
For the crime of attracting cable news crews, she (and her fiancé) is receiving merciless, relentless scrutiny - international voyeurism and gossip on the global scale.
Cable news with its global reach capriciously makes both heroes and villains out of people that deserve neither of the descriptions, and the leering masses (I guess that includes me) willing offers their mental and emotional resources to make it happen.
She must wear herself out just keeping those eyes open like that. I'm too lazy to do that once a year!
My condolences to your significant other.
I do have a huge problem with that, we of the era of wanting a good show. Any apology she owes anyone is strictly a private affair. To me, apologizing to the public is just a form of manipulation to sway public opinion or appease the public.
Sorry, you're wrong. Criminal arrests ( see plural) is categorized in the DSM III as "antisocial". Unless she has kleptomania.
In either case, I would hope we still hold people responsible for their behavior unless they are legally insane...which means they may be psychotic--in which case they are delusional and don't know right from wrong. They still qualify for consequences.
I am sick and tired of people behaving badly, it costing me tax dollars and they say" so sorry, I have issues."
It's such a weird question. Would I want my son to marry a girl like that? There are all sorts of bad women. I don't know what to say. It doesn't matter what I think. If her fiance still loves her and wants to marry her, then I say she is a very lucky girl.
I wonder if the fiance knew about this.
Run, man, run. Run like the wind AWAY from this psycho.
Yeah, what is Sean Hannity's deal?
If I weren't a girl, you'd really need to offer condolences to my "significant other" !!!! Lighten up.
I have been withholding any judgement, but am thinking more and more this is the case. I will also add that I think there is a possibility that Mason is a real piece of work in some ways also. Time will probably reveal what reality is.
But I do know that if some of the comments I've seen here were made to my face about my daughter, the person who uttered them would wake their sorry ass up in an ER.
I have four kids, one daughter. Even my personal "black sheep" son has NEVER COME CLOSE to what this broad has pulled. BTW, he's the same age as she is.
Nam Vet
LOL! OK, I'll take your word for it.
I need to go to bed. I am pitifully zonked.
Sort of fun tho. I'll call you once I break
free for an afternoon, Think I'll head on down
to the boats to see who I might find. I've been
told that some Laughlin dealers have left to come to Vickburg and Biloxi. Worth checking out since I knew
so many of them, *smile* :O)
